I agree with everything you said! And no, lol those are my friend Beth's...she lives back in NC. I met her through my friend in OK that I buy Serama eggs from. She has the cutest photos all the time!

I just bought some pour on and was going to try it. Not encouraging that it's not overly effective

I struggle with mites every spring/summer. Last summer, I got so fed up with them that I spent 6 straight hours dusting every single chicken (I have a lot lol) with Sevin. Not only did they not have any mites after that experience, I didn't either

We've had lice not mites but I just get out the sevin dust. Long sleeve, gloves and a mask. I also have the Adams flea and tick spray that I periodically spray where the roosts attach to the coop walls. I heard pressure washing the coop helps get rid of mites.

Last year I went out after dark every 2 weeks with a blacklight, Ivermectin, and a syringe (no needle) and dosed the chickens. It really cut down the numbers, but didn't seem to eliminate them completely. I just thought maybe someone has a sure-fire cure for this they wouldn't mind sharing?

BTW, Zoo, Nuria loves my hair. If I go out to her coop and put my head down, she runs her beak through my hair. It's hilarious! My husband just shakes his head and promises to find me a Chickens Anonymous group to join....

I use ivermectin injectable too in their water...it seems to help plus it also worms at the same time. They just got so bad last summer I had to dust them. I usually only dust their coop when I clean it.

And yep, almost all my chickens seem to love hair

I spend a lot of time holding and nuzzling them to my face and neck, starting from the very first day they hatch, so they are real lovers. In fact, I have a Serama roo - Romeo - in my hair right now, nibbling on my ear

Let me know when your husband finds that group...I need it too lol

I think it's a Zoo chicken thing!

Gloria was doing the same thing to me this evening! She kind of sat back then flew up on my shoulder and started nuzzling my hair. It was awesome! She's my new favorite chicken!!!!

We too have been fighting mites like crazy. The lice seem to be knocked out totally by the ivermectin. We're using ivermectin and the poultry lice/mite dust... does Sevin dust really work better than the permethrin? We were kind of hesitant to try it because it seems like a gardening dust might be too harsh on the birds... but at this point, I'd try anything.

I wonder if just doing the ivermectin every few weeks but dusting every 4 days for several weeks would totally get rid of them? The problem for us isn't getting rid of them, it's keeping them away!! With all the wild birds, our birds go out and free range and just pick them back up again. AHH!

Well, at least we seem to have them under control. Only one of the hens I checked today seemed like she was a little red around the vent, the others all looked good, and there weren't tons of them crawling - I only saw a few here and there as I was checking all the birds.

I know what you mean...it's so hard to get rid of them once you have them. They live in the wood and it's near impossible to rid the coop of them. I'm going to be painting the inside of my coop this summer to see if I can seal some cracks, but I'm sure I'll still have them. Just too many wild birds in the area...and I've always used Sevin. The poultry dust I bought at the feed store is useless, not sure what it has in it, but it didn't do anything. The people at Home Depot looked at me pretty strange when I bought 20 cans of Sevin last summer. The guy said "bug problems?" I said "you have no idea"

Babette is absolutely gorgeous, but funny little Nuria is my favorite (shhh....don't tell Babette that!). Hi, my name is Cindy, and I have chickens......
