I was thinking peritonitis too but I thought they died fairly quickly from this? She's doing great other than the walking. Lol you know me, I can't stick a needle into anything let alone let her "go". Sigh.

I let my hen go for about 6 months before culling her, and she probably could have done another 6 if not more. She was doing fine on the outside, bright eyes, walking, eating, "running", just looked bloated till one day decided that waddling around was getting to be too much. On retrospect, I should have culled her much much earlier because I bet she was in constant pain after looking at her compressed internals. Her guts were all messed up because of the masses and of her 6 lb body, almost 3 of it were the masses. I let it go wayyy too long just because I thought she looked happy enough despite waddling. The worst part... she did not give a fight when I let her go. When butchering a healthy bird for meat, they will resist a bit and flop post deed... her time was way past, she didn't fight and didn't flop at all. She was an awesome girl, still have a part of her hanging in one of the cars in memory of Brown Hen. Not as good as you are in the name dept. LOL

I had two hens die from that last month. I treated them for everything and they just never got better, only thinner. I have another one right now acting the same way but not thin, just moping about and walking with her tail feathers down all the time.

I have lost a few chicks/teens to something like this too! They had coxi, I treated them, then they just got thinner and thinner and finally died. It was like a month after the coxi! What in the world is it?

I lost my frizzle girl that I got from the swap with the same thing. She would just stick under Jackie, the other black chocin. She wasn't interested in food or water. She just withered....

Was really sad! She was really pretty! Jackie is totally fine though. She's growing out really nicely!

I have two big dogs that keep most everything that walks out (no good with birgs, minimally successful with burrowing pests) so no raccoons, opossums, foxes, or skunks.
I HOPE it isn't a weasel (having ferrets as pets I can imagine what weasels could do!) but it was only the day old chick without a head. Thats ALL theat was wrong. Eggs and broodies in almost all the boxes, one dead chick ing the UPPER box.
The 6 week old was just picked clean. Bones were still there, head included. Thats why I originally suspected cannibalism. We have rat traps out. Here's hoping I catch the thing!

On a happier note I now have FOUR healthy little chicks (three broodies down, three to go!) and a hatchery order showing up friday, I hope. 41 chickens now, another 23 (plus extras?) by the end of the week. Sixty-four chickens. I MUST be crazy!

I just read somewhere that coons will start with the head and will sometimes leave parts. (sounds gross!) I know they can undo locks and open doors also! (smart little fellers) I have even had cats that have just eaten heads off of squirrels, mice, etc. I know this because they have brought the rest of the 'body' in the house to me! When I had the cat door, I used to find all kinds of 'gifts' in house when I came home from work. We got rid of the door when we woke up one morning to find 5 cats sleeping on a couch in the living room, and only one belonged to us! (You should have seen the look on those cats eyes! It's funny now, but then my husband almost had a cow. Right there in the livingroom!! I witnessed it!) (and don't won't to again!)

We caught the coon in the hen house with our egg layers and he took the head off of all of them, the coon was still in there in the morning as he shut the door on himself. First time we ever forgot to shut it and yes he took the heads off!!!!

When I bring you chicks, eggs and crates later this month I might bring her too if she is still around.
