I have three bantam buff Faverolle / large fowl buff Orpington crosses. The girls are "supposed" to be intermediate size, but so far they are looking like they are going to be same size as their mamas... they are about 12 weeks old. Two of them are spazzier because they've been raised by a broody, but they are super pretty. Those are the only girls I'm letting go without boys....

Hello All!!

I've got a weird 'situation'/'problem' (not for sure what to call it) but it is strange to me. I have a buff orpington (3-4months old) I had her in with my other laying hens (4, all about same age and size) When I noticed her acting (here again, not for sure what to call it) 'different'. She would flatten herself out all weird and was letting all the others walk all over her! Actually stepping and standing right on her! Thinking she was ill, I pulled her out and put her in a cage by herself. She started acting normally. She was eating, drinking and pooping like a normal chicken. I left her separated, just in case she had been sick, for about 2 weeks. Today, I cleaned out everyone's cage and thought while she was back to acting well, I would put her back in the big pen with the other girls. She wasn't in there a half hour when she was at the front of the cage all flat, legs all wonkie, again! Course when I came in, the other girls ran to the front and the orp just let them walk and stand on top of her acting all weird! I pulled her out and put her back in a spot all by herself and she is acting normal again! what is going on!!?? I would think she would be lonely all by herself, but I think she likes it. Is she sick, brain damaged, mentally ill, or what!?? Like I said, she is about the same size as the others (2 delawares and 2 ameraucanas) but when you pick her up she feels like she is nothing but feathers. But I read somewhere that orps are like that, light weight midsize chickens. Buffy (ok, not a brainiac name but it worked) eats good, will even take treats offered, and drinks vitamin water. She only acts wonkie when you put her in a place with other hens/pullets. Has anyone else had anything similiar like this?
Thanks for any info,

Well that does make sense. So how do I give her confidence to climb up higher on those perches? I wanted to put her in the coop with all the other layers. I quess I could put her with the d'Uccles. Those hens are smaller then her, but Hef (the roo) can be a bully. Can roos be a bully to some hens also?
(such drama in the chicken coop) LOL

I haven't been able to keep up with all these posts, so I'm just jumping in to say that I plan to bring a bunch of jam in October! Besides the basic strawberry, raspberry, orange, I've made raspberry-nectarine (very limited edition, but I hope to pick some peaches and do rasp-peach), strawberry-lemon marmalade, raspberry-orange marmalade (the raspberries are coming in heavy!

) and cinnamon boysenberry! And there might be more varieties (I get bored easily

).

I also want to mention that I could use canning jars that are pint size or smaller, and I'll give you 30 cents credit for each one (if you're buying jam) or I'll pay you that amount.

I'm also planning to bring some sewn chickens, potholders, and jewelry. I hope I can figure out how to get all this stuff to Corvallis!
