Hi All. I have enjoyed this forum and look forward to attending the Chicken Swap in October. We have almost finished Miss Kat's Chicken Shack and run at our house on the Alsea River. My husband raised game birds when he was young in CA. I have never raised chickens and want to raise them for personal egg production. What breed do you kind folk recommend I start with? Can I bring them home in a dog carrier? And I am thinking of using milk crates for nests and straw for bedding.

I am liking my Australorps and Delawares, A dog carrier is good, milk crates are good, I would maybe use straw for the nests and shavings for bedding. (not sawdust!) That is just IMO.

I have what I believe is an Olive Egger that is 15 weeks old and just starting to crow. I say I believe he is an Olive Egger because he was in the same batch as Ameraucanas and I'm no expert at telling the difference between the two. Anyways... He's just started to practice his crowing and I don't want to start any feuds with the neighbors so I'm giving this cute roo away. He is a lavender color and is free to a new home now.

I am in the Tigard area and if anyone wants him, send me a pm.

Would there be any interest at this swap for freshly ground flour? We purchased several barrels of wheat straight from the field a couple of weeks ago for the chickens and personal use. The wheat grown here in the valley is a Soft White Wheat and when ground, it makes Whole Wheat Pastry Flour. I have a grain mill and could grind it to order a day or two before the swap, probably package it in Gallon Ziploc bags. If you have any specific questions about this type of flour, PM me. I have been doing lots of experimental cooking with it........ It is a lower protein and lower gluten flour.

Thank you for the bump! I have re-homed him, but found out the day after he was re-homed that we have ANOTHER rooster too! This one is (I'm pretty sure anyway) is a lavender ameraucana that is now 18 weeks old. He crows, but not very often so far. Needless to say, he is looking for a new home (free just as the last one was).
