Here you go! I have photos of both the spring and fall swap from last year. It is in my Castle Chickens collection folder (the link takes you there - safe site).
I have never transported chicks to and from the swap before (this will be the first year for me so I'm interested in the answer too) but I know when I've brought chicks home from a considerable distance (30 mins or so) around here, I make sure I have a box with a towel in it and keep the heater up high in the car. I've even sat them on the floor so they get a little extra heat from the floor vent. The older chickens I've bought I just put into crates. Both swaps were on very nice days (knock on wood!) so cold was never an issue - more like heat the last time!
Great pics Laura! Even better because I managed to make it into precisely zero of them! LOL
As far as the chicks go - I brought small chicks to the spring swap last year, and it really was too cold for them. I kept their crates covered with a thick coat to try to eliminate heat escaping and prevent drafts, but they probably should have had more. The fall swap wouldn't have been an issue, like Laura said, keeping the bigger birds shaded / cooler was the issue then, it was downright hot that day if you were in the sun. Now I have a converter that plugs into my cigarette lighter in my car that has 3 plug ins, so I can bring a heat lamp if needed. Another option for chicks that would be alot easier would be hand warmers.
I'll work harder on that first part in April
That is a really good idea about the hand warmers...I should stock up on some now since I see them everywhere. Probably like most things that you want or need, come April I won't be able to find them anywhere! Ever try and find a lunch box thing for your child in December??? They just don't exist!!!
