Here you go! I have photos of both the spring and fall swap from last year. It is in my Castle Chickens collection folder (the link takes you there - safe site).

I have never transported chicks to and from the swap before (this will be the first year for me so I'm interested in the answer too) but I know when I've brought chicks home from a considerable distance (30 mins or so) around here, I make sure I have a box with a towel in it and keep the heater up high in the car. I've even sat them on the floor so they get a little extra heat from the floor vent. The older chickens I've bought I just put into crates. Both swaps were on very nice days (knock on wood!) so cold was never an issue - more like heat the last time!

Great pics Laura! Even better because I managed to make it into precisely zero of them! LOL

As far as the chicks go - I brought small chicks to the spring swap last year, and it really was too cold for them. I kept their crates covered with a thick coat to try to eliminate heat escaping and prevent drafts, but they probably should have had more. The fall swap wouldn't have been an issue, like Laura said, keeping the bigger birds shaded / cooler was the issue then, it was downright hot that day if you were in the sun. Now I have a converter that plugs into my cigarette lighter in my car that has 3 plug ins, so I can bring a heat lamp if needed. Another option for chicks that would be alot easier would be hand warmers.

I'll work harder on that first part in April

That is a really good idea about the hand warmers...I should stock up on some now since I see them everywhere. Probably like most things that you want or need, come April I won't be able to find them anywhere! Ever try and find a lunch box thing for your child in December??? They just don't exist!!!

Thanks! Great photos - now I have an idea of what it might look like... and a good idea about either handwarmers or a car plug-in... I'll have to look into that as a way to transport home... I figured on bringing a hot water bottle, but couldn't figure out how to get it hot after the swap... unless I buy a large black coffee and pour that in!

I am leaning toward wanting cochins or silkies or wyandottes (I know - that doesn't narrow down too much)... not show birds; I just want pretty plummage in my backyard!

I would love younger chicks, since I'd be quaranteening them for a month at least anyway... and likely in my garage/studio with a heatlamp, like I did with the six I have now... sigh... April feels too far away!

They are quite beautiful, you def. want them. I'm keeping them separate for a while anyway. I think my silver laced pullets will be going to a friend this weekend and that frees up space. However, Aristotle is at work at my house...Nature abores a vacuum...any free space must be filled with chickens.

Yes, I definitely want them! Shoot me a PM when it becomes absolutely necessary to move them and I'll see what I can do. I am cleaning the garage this weekend so I might be able to make some room there I just couldn't get them for a couple weeks at least. This month is crazy till the end.

Here's my updated Want List:

Cinnamon Boysenberry jam from CathyM

2 - LF Lavendar Ameraucana pullets from Cloverleaf

1 - LF Splash Ameraucana pullet from Illia (if available)

Blue Wheaton Ameraucana pullet(s)
Speckled Sussex
Buff Sussex

Hi,
I have been following this thread, and even though I fear this sounds dumb, I'll ask anyway. What exactly happens at the swap? I did look at the flicker pictures but I'm afraid I still don't really understand.

I'm fairly new to owning chickens but I'm already in love with these funny little backyard friends. I got the small flock I have now as young adults already laying. I know that I want more (! chicken math? !) and I think I would like to skip the step of raising babies.

So if I am interested in getting pullets (? I think that's right) is the swap an opportunity to do that? Do I have to have a request of what I want before the swap?

Anyway, the whole thing sounds fun and I'm very interested in going.

Welcome! The only dumb question is one that is never asked.

As for what happens, you show up and hang out with other crazy chicken people. LOL

Most of the swapping occurs in the form of goods for cash. People bring what they have to sell and if you see something you like there, you can buy it!

If there is something specific, like the pullets you want, put it as one of your wants and someone who sees it might have it and you can make private arrangements with them for that item. Or if you see something someone has listed that you want, you can contact them via PM and arrange it that way. I think a lot of the things that are "swapped" at the swap are pre-arranged items. It's a good way to meet other members on here in person and to hang out for the most part. Many bring pot luck items to snack on with everyone too. Food is always a good thing :p.

Someone else might be able to explain more on what goes on, but that's my late night summary. I must be getting old, midnight is really late now-a-days.

Hope to see you there!
