Depends on the bird, some of them lay a pinkish brown, one lays a regular medium-brown, and one is the pinkish brown but kind of speckely when you look close.

I have a new have that will be ready by the time of swap. They are a month old now and need at least another month to age.

Vanilla Extract!!!

Real Madagascar beans from Madagascar and vodka! Not that ebay stuff from Paupa New Guinea and no sugar added to give off a fake sweetness. I've made them going by the federal minimum of about 14 ounces of beans per gallon of vodka, so there is about 3.5 beans per 4 ounce jar. Vanilla extract, not vanilla vodka. LOL $8 each or 2/$15. It is unfiltered and if you shake it up, you can get little vanilla specks in your baked goodies!

I might have individual beans with me if anyone is interested for $2 each.... provided I don't use them all up first!

I have a question for the more experienced: how do you transport & keep warm all these lovely chickies and eggs? I will have a drive of 1.5 hours one way to get to the swap, and even if April is lovely, I would worry if I got young chicks (and I would love to get young chicks!) - what is a good way to keep them warm on the way home? How do you-all keep them warm during the swap? I'm looking forward to seeing how this looks! Anyone have photos taken at a previous swap?

Here you go! I have photos of both the spring and fall swap from last year. It is in my Castle Chickens collection folder (the link takes you there - safe site).

I have never transported chicks to and from the swap before (this will be the first year for me so I'm interested in the answer too) but I know when I've brought chicks home from a considerable distance (30 mins or so) around here, I make sure I have a box with a towel in it and keep the heater up high in the car. I've even sat them on the floor so they get a little extra heat from the floor vent. The older chickens I've bought I just put into crates. Both swaps were on very nice days (knock on wood!) so cold was never an issue - more like heat the last time!

This will be the weekend immediately following the Stevenson, WA show - so I might be really whipped from that, but if I do decide to go, would anyone be interested in any Dominique eggs or chicks? Not sure if we'll have chicks at that point, but if I knew someone wanted to buy some eggs or chicks we might do a trio or two of breeders and get something together.

I should add - I will be going to that show. If anyone wants me to bring back any breeder's names, photos of specific breeds, anything, PM me to let me know and I'll do my best.

Great pics Laura! Even better because I managed to make it into precisely zero of them! LOL

As far as the chicks go - I brought small chicks to the spring swap last year, and it really was too cold for them. I kept their crates covered with a thick coat to try to eliminate heat escaping and prevent drafts, but they probably should have had more. The fall swap wouldn't have been an issue, like Laura said, keeping the bigger birds shaded / cooler was the issue then, it was downright hot that day if you were in the sun. Now I have a converter that plugs into my cigarette lighter in my car that has 3 plug ins, so I can bring a heat lamp if needed. Another option for chicks that would be alot easier would be hand warmers.
