Oregon Spring Poultry Swap April 23, 2011 in Canby!!!

I'd gladly rent your broody tallyho lol. Now, Fiona, the hen that hatched Ainslee, is broody

I don't know if I should give her a few of my eggs or not....do I really want to start this process over again? Ainslee is in a separate cage and will be till the baby grows up so I guess it would work....sigh

No idea about Ingrid, she's the first of the project to hatch! Keri has eggs in her incubator right now but none of them have hatched yet. The rooster is a tir-color Sizzle and the hen is a brown leghorn so who knows!

On a sad note, my last baby from the incubator that I thought was going to make it just died while I was on the phone making an appointment with my vet to euthanize Aggie my Serama. He hatched with a slipped tendon and was doing ok but I noticed last night he was not able to get around very well...this morning not at all. I can't cull them myself; wish I could but I can't.

If my Silkie would stay broody I would be a happy girl! She never really produces many eggs so why not have a constant incubator, but alas she won't do that for me! My other chickens have yet to go broody and I am hoping they wont, especially since they have decided to start to molt and I am now only getting 2 eggs a day!!! So incubators it is. As for having so many chicks they start to remind you of the nails going down a chalkboard...that's what the fall season and the first part of winter are for...time to take a break before you start again! I used to run a floral shop and I figure it will be a lot like Valentines Day, or wedding season...you are harried, and stressed and swear you hate flowers and don't know why you ever became a florist, and then when its over you miss the excitement of it and can't wait for it to come again!

Bring on the fluffy butts I say!!!
Beckie

This dumb thing is broody all summer! I probably get a dozen eggs from her the entire season. I have tried and failed in the past to break her. I have found it is just easier to give in and let her have some eggs. Somehow she does find time for herself though. I will catch her off her nest drinking, eating, sunning and socializing. But then she goes right back to work. I should rent her out!

LOL...Well my Silkie went broody, then laid about 7 eggs, and now has not laid an egg in about a week or so...but she is not hanging out in a nest either, so I think she is just being a brat and keeping all her eggs! When she lays, she actually does it regularly, the problem is she keeping stopping then going, then stopping again!!! It is extremely frustrating!!! I would totally take your broody, or just give you some eggs for her to hatch! LOL I am always looking at e-bay and other places wanting so badly to buy eggs just to see how they will turn out!

I am so sorry about your latest chick! I know what you mean though, I will stay up all night with no sleep (my son won't sleep either, he worries too badly for them) if I have a chick that is not doing good. I just cant cull them either! It is heartbreaking everytime, but I have to remind myself and him that sometimes they are not meant to make it. Just remember you did everything you could!

Just give her some eggs! You know she will drive you nuts if you don't.

I'm sorry about the little guy.

You've had a tough time. But along with life comes death and I guess some just don't live that long. It's still hard. I always worry when I hatch that I will have to cull but that's the reality and I know I need to be prepared. I get bummed when I have quitters or eggs that make to lockdown and never hatch (silkies!).

Thanks guys

I usually am pretty together and have been getting much better about the hatching and "not making it chicks" (haven't had to cull any thankfully), but I will openly admit that I am feeling very overwhelmed today. I expected the chick not to make it but now Aggie...he's 8 weeks old so I've become attached

I am proud of myself for making the decision though - I just can't do it. I don't have anyone I can ask either. The last chicken we had to cull (prolapse right before Christmas) we took to my neighbors because she had chickens and said she would help me. Well, apparently it went very badly and it still haunts me. I am thankful my vet is understanding and will help me. I honestly hate this part of chickens. Ok, this and the mud bog in my run right now lol

Does anybody have any SQ bantam Cochin pullets or hens I could get before the swap? I have 2 4Hers looking for some. Pretty much any color except white please!

White birds? I don't know about you, but my white leghorns are never white. LOL I call them mudhorns.

Speaking of which, I was visiting a friend who lives in the coast range. I pointed at one of her beautiful reddish peachy colored hens and noted how I really liked that color, she reminded me to look at the clay soil and told me that was a white silkie. LOL

And I guess the feathers on the feet put them in a whole different category of dirty bird.
