Oregon Spring Poultry Swap April 23, 2011 in Canby!!!

Calls and runners can be kind of spastic, and calls can fly so need to be trimmed or kept completely confined. Although it may seem counter-intuitive, two larger breeds, Saxonies and Silver Appleyard, are actually calmer and easier for me to catch. I took two Silver Appleyard drakes to their first show this past weekend, and they were far calmer than I expected.

I would recommend the Silver Appleyard. No matter what, ducklings do go through a spaz phase. The Silver Appleyards are slower moving and very food motivated, yet are great at foraging for insects and I've seen them eat a mouse and frogs.

Pekins might be another good option. Also easier to get rid of extra drakes of heavy breed ducks.

Really? The breeder I bought mine from (Mahlum) said they don't fly...?? And mine haven't...

For anyone buying or selling silkies, please remember that this Spring Stevenson, WA is hosting the Western Silkie National. In order to continue to get nationals and gain more attention for the shows out here, we need birds entered. If you think your bird might be show quality, or just want to gain experience, please consider entering your silkie in the Spring Stevenson show. It's a fun time, and there will be special silent auctions and prizes. I am going to donate a pair of nice birds for sale, with it being probable that one will be a lavender bearded cockerel that I am currently holding back and using for breeding.

Please consider showing your birds and coming to learn, bid on silent auction silkie items, etc. There are also great prizes for juniors participating in the silkie national, and of course it is in conjunction with the normal spring show so all breeds can be entered.

Yep, I know however, I do want Serama roosters so for this hatch I'm gonna be ok but I've decided (and promised myself) that if I hatch eggs just for the fun of it - no matter what they are and how cute they are, they have to go away while they are still chicks. You've all heard me say that, right? LOL

Oh yes, we've heard it all before...lol FYI, during Jan - April I can't keep chicks in the house, they go so fast via CL, BUT after April, chick sales slow WAY down...so if you want to sell chicks fast, hatch early and THEN STOP!

Oh yeah, and good luck with that whole "stopping" thing!

LOL c'mon, have some faith in me

That is good to know about hatching early then stopping. I can definitely see how that would be the case. After April, all the feed stores have their chicks and people are probably overwhelmed with choices or already have their layers for the season. This first hatch is just for me with maybe a few chicks available if all goes well. After January 1 we'll see what happens

...I know, I know, it's hard to believe...but it happens! LOL

Yeah, luckily that "sick of chicks" feeling never lasts too long for me either...which is why I have 9 week old chicks in the brooder, and the incubator is running, even though I told myself "no more incubating until January"...we see how well THAT panned out...

About as well as "I will never own an incubator"

It's still very sad around here without her. But this silkie show is good news! Something to look forward to.
