Oregon Spring Poultry Swap May 5, 2012 in Canby!!!

On the subject of future swaps, I would like to poll ya'll:

How far south would you travel for a swap? (name cities, please, NOT miles, unless you want to tell us all where you live!)
What month would be best for a 3rd Oregon Poultry Swap? (I hope to avoid conflicts with other northern events I can't go to)

See, I am down at the southern border of the state and all the other swaps are a MINUMUM of a 4 hour drive for me, each way. Which means overnighting with poultry. It also means uprooting at least half the family since I don't travel alone.
If there was ONE closer by, I would be okay with that, but everybody else seems to think the state goes no farther south than Eugene. (Not just here, mind you, Southern Oregon is always overlooked!)
So since nobody else is doing it, I am CONSIDERING trying to organize a Southern Swap, probably in Medford or better yet (for me) in Central Point (just a bit north of Medford) maybe at the Jackson Co. fairgrounds (5 miles from my house is WAY better than 400!) Not that I am trying to be selfish; I want everyone to be able to come. I just figure if I am the one organizing, I should get to pick the place.

So what do you guys think? If I organize it, will people come? I have only ever been to one swap before and have never tried to organize an event before, so I am in new territory here.

I think this is a great idea. We've been trying to get someone to pick up the ball for the southern people for quite some time now but no one was willing or able to put in the time (it takes a lot!!!) to make it happen. As far as month, can't really help you there. You could do a summer one since a lot of us in the valley do not go to the one in Redmond. Just an idea....definitely stay away from winter though lol]

Oh and yeah, not selfish at all lol...the fall swap is only 5 minutes from my house

Honestly, there is no way I could do it if it wasn't especially the way it has grown.

I would love to see a regular summer swap, but I must admit I would not likely be willing to drive as far as Medford. From my location that is a 5 to 6 hour drive one way. I already drive around 2 hours to attend the swaps up north. I can totally understand you're not wanting to drive so far with poultry in your vehicle. But, hopefully there are others who are closer to you that would able to make it. I myself keep thinking we need a summer swap here on the coast.

I have to say I'm with you. Medford is just too far for me but I really would like to see one started. I like the idea of having one in Eastern Oregon and on the Coast too each summer. They don't have to be huge, just enough for the people in those areas to enjoy what we enjoy here in the valley.

I was mulling over the idea of having one here in Coos Bay. It is about 2 hours south of Eugene and is quite nice in the Summer.

If a Central Pt/ Medford area swap was organized at a time I didn't have 5 million other things going on, I would make the drive down, my dad lives in Medford, so it would be a good excuse to go see him!

I have three Partridge Chantecler pullets available right now if anyone is interested. They are 10 months old and laying really well. I listed an auction in the 8 weeks and older section, but meant to post it as a BIN. If anyone is interested I will delete the auction. I do not want to hold onto them until swap time...

by Southern Oregon, you don't mean Klamath Falls?

Anything west of the cascades and further south than Eugene is much too far for me.

Eugene is so difficult to drive in, I would probably pass on a swap in Eugene, too. I can barely justify going to Corvallis.

Just a suggestion: people whop are going to swaps in Portland aren't going to be your main audience. People in Southern Oregon who can't make it to Portland are probably not following this particular forum. There are probably plenty of poultry raisers in Southern Oregon.
