Oregon

Hey everyone. Thought i'd come introduce myself. Moved out here to central Oregon after getting out of the military. Getting my little farm going still. Slow process but its getting there.

Looking for Long Crowers. I just got tomaru and ketawas chicks not too long ago. Will be willing to trade eggs next year. Currently all I have are Polish, Americauna, Jersey Giant, Silkie and Japanese Bantams. I'll have my breeding cages set up next year so All eggs will be pure breeds other than what I intentionally cross.

The other new breeds added this year are Crevecoeur, Sultans and Seramas.
Stay safe!

Welcome! Where are ya from originally?

And can't wait for your ketawas to start crowing--I would never own one myself, but appreciate those maniacal crows!

Originally I moved around all the time. Military family and all that. He's already started to crow but only has one laugh so far. It goes HaaaaaHa. Super cute. I'll have to put it on youtube sometime.

I'm really liking the Tomaru chicks too. They are extremely friendly. They have long legs with a tiny body.

I'm in Aloha, so maybe about 40 minutes from you? Yay, a neighbor so close!
Late to the party as usual, but I'm in SE Portland. Just getting my flock started, so I'm going to be bugging you for local resources :D. I'm looking for a decent quality coop but everything I'm finding seems to be very flimsy. Any suggestions?

Yes--another suburb dweller! You should join the Oregon Chickens and Garden page on FB. Great resource for getting local birds, supplies and just general joy looking at chick pics.

Hmm, pre-fab coops are a bit of a hot commodity right now. What's your budget?

Keep in mind that pre-fabs an be reinforced and weather proofed on a low budget, so if durability was an issue it can be addressed. Case in point was my starter coop. Cost me $300 from Wilco and weatherized by putting it on 4"x4" pressure treated cedar and using caulking to fill in gaps. A few extra 2"x2"s across the upper portion act as roosts and extra support.

That definitely can work well in a suburban environment. Especially if you dont have to worry about fox, racoon, wolves or the like. I've had a racoon tear through the fir wood ones like they were paper.

Ugh, I know what you mean. I'm in the burbs now, but I'm originally from S. Oregon where we have a lot of wildlife including cougars and coyotes. My mom's newest coop installment (made using the best design aspects of all the previous iterations) is basically a wooden fortress surrounded by 3 fences and protected by an ornery turkey and an old mastiff. The only thing she forgot was to cover a portion of the run aaaaand in swoops a hawk XD

All I have to worry about up here are the occasional neighbor cats, but a quick spritz from the hose dissuades any of that nonsense.

This last winter, in order to keep my flock safe, I stuck my two dawgs in heated runs that lead into the house I made for them near the coop. I have a 110lb dawg and a 20 lb too big for her britches mix. She'll be the first two notice if anyone is coming close to the coop while the big on is there to finish the job after he gets off his lazy butt lol.

Recently, I got one of those ez coops and a producers pride steel run. No one is gettin in there now. Not to mention my giant poopy and his little scrappy companion is still there for protection. They're made of 2x4s and thick wood and they send it to you in wall sections.

I grabbed some liege fighters that are actually hatching now. Hoping for at least one roo. I also have some pretty big geese and guinea fowl as well. The geese are super guards during the day. The guinea mostly just make noise at predators but has been good against snakes!

OverEZ chicken coops are amazing. They're made with great materials. I have the large one and I just ordered the small one for my seramas. I've found them cheapest off tractor supply website.
I had looked at those on-line, but always wary of ordering stuff sight-unseen. Good to get a recommendation, thanks. Oh, and despite being in the 'burbs, we do have coyotes and racoons in the 'hood. So security is definitely a consideration.

I'm not Rockefeller, but I would rather spend now and get something durable. I'd rather get something that does the job it's supposed to than have to cobble together something to make it work (Ok, so read that as I'm not the handiest of people!) And thanks for letting me know about the FB page - I'll check it out.
