I have a terrible hawk problem in the city. I see them all the time and I have lost some birds to them (in a relatively secure pen). I read that CDs hanging from the trees helps. Wonder what the neighbors will think...?

I'm not in the city but we have a really bad hawk problem here. I've never lost a chicken to one though. My run is completely covered with bird netting secured to the coop, the fence and the garage. I check it for rips and tears constantly. I'm almost nuts about doing it but it's better than the alternative....

I had a bantam Ameraucana pullet chick (naturally it was a pullet, and not a cockerel) get killed by a hawk through 1/2" welded wire this year! I lost 2 Silkies to a hawk through 1" chicken wire last year, so thought this was a better alternative...

One hatched all by itself, three others pipped and zipped and stopped, so I just helped them this morning. The polish was the first to pip and the last one I helped...it was still alive. I didn't have time to get all the gunk off of it this morning, hoping it'll finish drying and I can get it later today.

It killed your pullet through 1" welded wire?!

Oh, say it isn't so!

My main run is covered with a gabled roof and sides 1/2" hardware cloth but my expand-o run is plastic chicken wire stuff covered with netting. If a hawk can kill through wire--netting is like a tissue--although maybe they'd risk entanglement and not try?? Ugh.

Sorry about your sweet pullet

Really? Wow....that scares me. I've never had a single hawk even come close to my netting.

yeah, I was shocked, the chicken wire incident was why I paid out the wazoo for the 1/2" welded wire on the 2 tractors I had built this year. I happened to walk out while he was "snacking" and scare him off, it was a Coopers hawk. He had bloodied the combs on three other babies before he got a hold of her through the wire. I say "chicks" but they were about 12 weeks old.

re: hawk - purchased bird netting today and will secure to outside run area...I won't hang old cd's but I will tape some metallic ribbons around on trees - we'll see if that works! I need to get some ribbon for the garden area anyway..between the deer, birds, hawks and horses...I should be protecting my garden and flock 24 hrs a day! ahhhh well, it's beautiful and I love that I can enjoy.

when i figure out how to post pictures, i'll send pictures of my girls

Hello fellow Oregonians!
I live down in Medford and am new to raising chickens. So excited to see a thread for us! Looking for new friends on here. Please 'friend' me if you'd like. I'd like to start off with a group of local peeps. It helps in regards to weather issues and other general Oregon topics. Hope to 'see' you around!

Leslie

We will be building an Amish style coop in the next week or so. I was wondering if it was necessary to insulate the roof? I live in So. Oregon where the temp gets down to the teens a time or two during the winter, but mostly the lows are in the 30's. Any other advice on building? i.e. fans for summer, south windows/venting, roof venting? Looking at a 4x6 coop for my 6 chicks. Thanks!!
