Oregon

We just moved from Eugene last spring to(just outside of)Drain. I thought I loved Eugene but man, oh, man, do I love it out here in the boondocks. I don't think I could ever go back.

and I love Drain! It's close to Eugene, but yet not too far away!

Hi folks,

We're down in SillyCon Valley for now. But we drive up to Portland every summer for a geek conference and really love Oregon. We're thinking of relocating there in 10 years or so when DH retires. We're starting now to look at places in Southern Oregon where we could get 5-10 acres to have a "hobby farm". Figured it was worth starting to look in case we saw something selling really cheap due to the recession and then we would have time to get it fixed up before we moved.

We are looking for mild climate, not much snow in winter and more sun than rain in summer. (I'm from MN, but he's from Italy.) Internet access is a must for us. We can build on the land if there's no house. DH is hoping to find somewhere close enough to a town to not have to deal with septic systems. I'm not sure such land exists, but that's why we're starting now.

Anyways - this is all by way of saying, if you happen to spot something going cheap in an area you like living, let me know. And figured I'd get to know some of you nice folks up there somewhat beforehand.

I live in a small town outside of Portland. There is a lot of agricultural land just outside of our town proper. And....lots of wineries! (Also, many wineries in neighboring Yamhill county). We maybe get one good snow every other winter, but it leaves pretty quickly. Our springs tend to be rainy. And aside from a less than stellar summer every so often, we can get some heat here. We are not Southern Oregon (have you checked out the Ashland area?) but still, pretty nice and property if very reasonable right now. We're also about an hour and a 1/2 from the coast.

So, I'm told by a real estate lady that, if we want city sewer, we can't have critters. So, I'm wondering what towns ya'll live in that allow chickens (and goats?) - or are ya'll outside city limits?

I think your real estate lady pretty much summed it up...EXCEPT for Milwaukie...don't know if you'll find the amount of space you're looking for, but they have no regs on chickens, don't know about goats, but I've heard you can do pretty much whatever you want in Milwaukie... it's RIGHT outside of Portland though...
