Oregon

Thanks for the info guys. Zanna, thanks for the offer. I'm always up for some pictures, but its not a biggie right now. I'm just trying to find sources for quality birds when it comes time to replace the flock. My flock is only a year old ( not on lights) so i got a little time to research where I can find what I want. BUT!, I think this spring I may need to add a couple BCMs to fill the Dark egg desire. Before we got our flock I researched alot, and found that we wanted Barnevelders, Welsummers, Marans and Wyandottes. I had to really search for the Barnies but found a source that could order them. The others were plentifull around here in the spring, EXCEPT for the BCMs. I even bought a pair of chicks at a later date that were believed to be marans but anded up being an Iowa Blue and a Minorca. In Chick form, to a newbie they looked the same. Bummer
Now, for the reason for locating good sources in advanced. The Barnies have lack of yellow legs, ok egg color and they had the "V" on the heads as chicks. My Welsummers lay a lighter egg than my brothers production reds. And the list Goes on. I guess its ok for now. But since I've done more research, I have come to the conclusion that even though I only Have a small backyard flock ( 11 hens ) without a rooster and dont plan to breed, By obtaining better quality birds it will help the breeds keep standard. Am I right in thinking that?
Anyways, thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Glad i found out about the Oregon thread, that way the knowledge I gain is from my region.

Did he hatch from a blue or green egg? How old is he? He looks more like a silver laced mix of some kind...Wyandotte mix maybe? What are the possibilities for his parentage? He has no discernable EE traits that I can see...

Can you keep him until swap time? You will probably be able to find him a home there...

he came from a light green small egg i got the eggs from a gentlmen when i got my ee hen.. i believe the egg to be one of hers and there was a polish rooster and another roster that lookes like he does minus the beard... when is the swap he is four months now i can keep him till he starts to get vocal.

Definately not inappropriate to post this here.

People post their available birds for other local Oregon BYCers to see all the time. Guilty of that myself.

Welcome! Good luck finding your boy a home. Poor roosters....seems like there are always too m any roosters and not enough homes.

OK, so he has a 50% chance of carrying the blue egg gene to his offspring, but I think he does not carry it, since he has a single comb. The blue egg gene is linked to the pea comb, though that's not 100% reliable either...

To help keep him quiet, if you have a garage, or some other place that's dark that you can keep him in at night / early morning, then bring him out later in the morning...lots of city folks keep roosters that way...

The swap is May 5th in Canby...

Hey, anyone know of a place you can just buy a small egg turner (for brinsea mini advanced) or do you just always have to order them? Also, point me in direction of someone who sells hatching eggs for silkies? Tired of surfing the net tonight.
Thanks all
Getting used to this new board (not sure my computer is happy about it, lol, slow bugger tonight).

I don't know about the Brinsea turner, other than buying it directly from the manufacturers website...for Silkie eggs, Marge Best in Oregon City, Jennifer Vidmar (ultasol on here) or Karen Larson (kelar on here I believe)... :)
