Oregon

Grants Pass is pretty close.  I was just teasing her.  kinda.

gosh and I thought it was funny because my husband is from ca and I lived there for three years. He lives there now because of the coast guard but will be home in Oregon for good in one month. I hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings.

It's a teasing thing. I remember living in Montana and they did the same thing to people from North Dakota. I have friends in California that just moved there about a month ago. Some of the pictures the post on Facebook are just amazing! I think that I would love northern California. BUT, I would have to learn to pump my own gas, lol.

I remember when we moved to WA state in 1979. There was a spray painted message on an overpass in the Redmond area that said "don't Californicate Washington". I thought that was pretty funny, actually. We eventually moved back here for employment reasons. But on a more serious note, keep in mind that retirees bring a nice steady income to an area and support the local economy. We will be hiring help to build a house and hubby will need at least one welder for his business. Plus when a property changes hands, it puts more money into someone else's hands...more money is better for local economies esp in these times.

And you ARE looking for buyers for your poultry, yes?!

Oh and you can't blame us (besides, I've always loved Oregon - driving back and forth between states and vacationing on the coast there). We actually tried to move to Idaho...had two properties in escrow, until the wells came back over allowable contamination for arsenic. Guess that is a big problem there.

Uh oh, I am in trouble, me and my big mouth. haha.
Arsenic in water is troublesome here as well. You need some really good filters.
I think that most people, at least where I am from, are more worried about politics than the actual people themselves.
But then that is yet another can of worms...

There are good people everywhere, in any state. I tend to look for the natural beauty of the place, rather than the people. I really want to go visit my friends in the redwood forest!

DH is kidding me about having to go to Brookings on Monday for a couple of days. He's only escaping the heat for a couple of days-still supposed to be hot when he gets back.

Hey, I'm in Eugene, OR and it's a scorcher here!!!! My chickens are spending lots of time under our bushes and in the shade. We've been giving them ice cold watermelon & pineapple and they are loving it.

I have a question for anyone that can help. We've had chickens for a little over a year now. We have 3 yr old Barred Rocks, 3 ye old Rhode Island Red, 17 month old Silver Wyndotte, 17 month old Americana & a 17 month old I think they called her a Lowman. My question: We just got a 15 week old Americana Roo. When will he start wanting to mate and how do we tell if he's mated with one. We have 5 nesting boxes and all our girls want to use the same one. We would like some baby chicks to sell but I'm not really sure how to tell if my hen should sit on it or not. We've been selling our eggs to some regulars since we've had the girlies and I would like to continue to do that. Sorry if this sounds complicated we are kind of new lol.

Thanks and hope everyone is staying cool in OR!!

Ugh. Heat. Yuck.

To answer your question, a rooster becomes fertile at different ages. It is like asking, when will my hen start to lay eggs? A good indication is when he begins trying to whoo your hens. Usually @ the 16 week mark. It will take him a few tries to get it right. After you have noticed him doing the dastardly deed, wait a week, then do an eggtopsy. See if you are getting the "bullseye" mark on the egg. I have seen them become fertile at 16 weeks all the way up to 24 weeks. Same as when pullets start laying eggs.

I would be happy if someone was feeding me cold watermelon and pineapple too! lol. I keep going outside to make sure everyone has cool water...

I remember when my fiance first started coming to Oregon from Texas to visit me. It was 85 out and he had to wear a jacket.
