Oregon

I'm melting, and its suppose to be worse tomorrow. I kept going out and hosing the ground down too. Another good idea is to freeze jugs of water and set it in the run with them.

I've had some panting and spread wings but no serious distress so far. We've got alot more summer to come.

We've got about the same -- birds look warm but okay. It seems a bit early for it to be warm up here. Technically, summer never starts in the Portland area until July 5th, so I am a bit worried.

We did think about the occasional summer heat when we selected the spot for the coop so our coop is very shaded, the nesting boxes are on the shadiest side of the coop, and parts of the runs are very shaded, too. The soil is still moist not too far under ground, so the birds can scratch down to it. We usually get a breeze in the afternoons ... that helps recover from the hottest part of the day. And I've deployed little wading pools, though the chickens and turkeys aren't sure yet if they think that's okay. Even on the hottest days is "pleasant" up at the coop ... we had some people over for an afternoon brunch on Sunday, and they said it was a relief to leave the kitchen so they could hang out in the coop.

Same here. been hosing down the shade and coops and when I have a bunch of the chickens, I'll hose then down too. i think I have one roo with heat stroke so i gave him a cool bath, then he started shivering so I blew dried him. then gave him elctrolytes and he's in the bathroom recuperating. Not sure if he'll make it.

Poor thing!

Mine have been panting and such, but so far so good. Forcasted to be 95 here today. I am doing the same as everyone else, watering down the shady spots, as mine free range. The only problem I am having is the freaking ducks wanting to defend the water dishes. I am rethinking the whole duck idea. This is the first time I have ever had them, and they are bossy!

Yeah, ducks can be bossy! I'm trying to provide multiple options for resources, so everyone gets a chance. I keep most of my ducks in their own area, so they can only harass each other. I do have two ducks that sleep in the turkey coop, and yesterday I put them in early so they could explore the new kiddie pool in there, and the ducks made it clear the pool is theirs. Those two ducks free range during the day, so I hope the turkeys figure out the schedule. Turkeys are pretty curious, so I have high expectations that they will.

I am feeling very lucky! I make sure the chicken have plenty of fresh water but it hasn't been over 80 where I live and that was only one day. I think I am taking it worse than the hens. The 70% humidity is killing me, but I guess it is still better then then we lived in MI.

My birds are panting even tonight, as they sleep in their coop. I hope they are all right. I couldn't find the electrolytes to put on their water. Can I substitute sugar and salt in their water?
I have asked for a formula on an other thread, hopefully I'll hear back soon.

Mine are still hot also, open mouth breathing but no wing spreading. I'll go out later and close things up to keep the wild critters out tonight but I wish I could leave the people doors open for them. Sure hope we cool down tonight!

The Grange sells Rooster Booster and the small packets for chicks.
