Something has been after our ducks at night.

We aren't sure how whatever it is is getting in. We lost two of the babies already, and are scrambling to solve the problem. Poor little duckies.

Oh Im so sorry! What do they look like when you find them? The other week some cats got 4 of my chickens. I know it was cats because the neck was chewed on. The cats got 3 bantams, 2 bantam roosters 1 bantam hen, the hen was my hen I showed at fair. Also the cats got a LF rooster, Leghorn.

I'm happy to report I have not been the one to find them, but Nelson says the necks have been removed (with the heads) clear down at the shoulders. The heads are gone, the bodies are still there. We have put them in a super security pen for the night(s) until we get a really solid duck habitat built.

Hm, maybe a racoon, they will take the necks.

My friend had 5 chickens killed with their head and necks removed. It turned out to be an Owl.

Oh, wow! I hadn't thought of that! We have LOTS of owls here. Tonight I was out in the chicken coop quite a while after dark, and I heard a very loud owl out by the duck pen. Then I heard the ducks making lots of noise (for ducks). But they are in their security pen tonight, so when I stopped by to check on them, they were all snuggled together safe and sound.

Note to self: make sure there is a TOP on the duck habitat.

Owls will do that. What time were they killed Leslie?

I honestly have no idea. I put them in their pen at dark last night, their pen is quite tall but has an open top. It isn't much of a pen because the ducks were kind of a surprise and we've been concentrating on keeping up with the housing needs for the Chickens.

I think Nelson checked everyone about 8 PM, maybe a bit later. Everyone was okay at that time. It was early, about sunrise when Nelson went out this morning ... The chickens were making tons of noise, so I was worried something had gotten into their coop, which is pretty secure but you never know. Unfortunately, it was the duck habitat that had been broken into. Again. Poor Nelson.

Considering the state of the duck habitat, I can't say I'm very surprised. But as we are a few days away from building a more proper Duck enclosure, I'm kicking myself. I had just put the four babies in with the adults ... This is probably what has attracted predator attention. But I've been having this feeling of urgency about getting it done. I have ordered materials, and was waiting for someone to have time to bring them here and help me build the thing ... and now they feel super rotten about it, too. We are now down to just two babies ...
