So one of my new chicks keep pasting up. Her bottom looks really irritated since I keep having to clean her. I'm not feeding medicated starter. Should I be kicking myself for that? Any suggestions to clear it up or help her out?

Some just do that and basically, means they won't make it. You could try some yogurt to stabilize her innerds. I've tried to help chicks that have pasty but, and I do feed the medicated chick starter with ground up scratch, but there are some some that don't make it. Sorry.

So it's 11pm and I am out hiding easter eggs. I am about to close the door and I hear our rooster crow. Is this normal or is he just a freek crowing at 11pm? I don't mind if he is a freek. They are locked in the hen house so it isn't too loud and the neighbors shouldn't complain, but I may have an issue!

They crow all day and all night.

Bummer. That's what I'm worried about. Poor girl. It's the marans.

Sorry to here that. I sometimes get a paint chick. This would be my second one in a year, but both had genetics that meant they died early. I'm going to keep trying though. you can always just not give up on the little guy. I'm just saying, I did that and it basically just prolonged the death...

Calcium deposits

So does this mean I'm giving them too much calcium cause I do mix there fees with oyster shell

I had one that did that in the begining and she is now 10 weeks old and strong and healthy. My BF had one in her flock that did it consistently in the beginning too. Do you add unfiltered apple cider vinegar (with the mother) to their water? You can also make a crumble of cornmeal (I would advise organic) by adding a little water and then mixing it into their regular feed. And I would also recommend giving them a probiotic, which you can add into their water as well. And just be vigilent about checking her and trying to keep her clean. I am no expert by any means this is our first flock, but I just wanted to share my experience since it turned out good for us. We don't use medicated feed either. I hope your little chick is OK! I also did give our pasty girl extra love and attention too; I would swaddle her up all warm in a blanket and she spent lots of time on the couch with my daughter and I watching TV Keep us posted please <3

None lay "red" eggs...but there are some breeds that lay a very dark brown egg, and some of those have almost a terra cotta look to them, I would say that Welsummers have a redder hue to them than others, then Penedesencas, then Marans, the Marans seem to be the most chocolatey of the three.  Though, to get good egg color, you will want to find them from private breeders that breed for egg color, you won't get as good of egg color from hatchery stock.

I've done a little looking and found a breed call barnevelder and they lay a reddish tint and for marans what variety lay the Terra cotta color

Pasty butt should not last for more than a few days but the irritation cause by both the ammonia and our picking at the area. is another story.

Try active culture buttermilk to improve gut flora, they seem to like it better than yogurt. Then keep the vent clear but avoid rubbing or pulling at the skin and feathers. Try either soaking her bottom is warn water or use food grad oil to soften the poop then wipe it with soft toilet paper or tissue. If it's irritated I use A&D ointment or vit E oil to sooth. This will help keep future poops from sticking.

I just gave a chicken a bath. She was so happy she fell asleep with her behind in the bath water. This is the craziest thing I think I've ever done on a Sunday night. Happy Easter. And thank you everyone for your help!!
