incubatingisfun~ Are you in the valley? We used to come up from Anch and do volunteer work at some of the veggie farms as kids. I miss it!

This rain is making feel like I'm living in the valley. The girls are over 5 weeks now and their heads are starting to poke out of the brooder top. If I open it though they fly out and run around pooping all over the garage. On Wed. I put them out in the pen as it wasn't raining yet. I left to take the boys to the park, and naturally it started to downpour! Where is all this coming from? I know it's good for reserves, but I dont' have a coop yet, and after rushing home to get them in I found my partner at the house. He knew I was at the park and rushed home to get them in. So Sweet!

On a side note, after having 2 boys, we just found out I am pregnant with a girl. I think with the chickens the male/female energy should be just about even.

juniperyogi .im not from the valley i live an hour and a half away from anchorage in a little town called hope. congrats on the girl.
chickenboss. raising chickens in alaska is good besides them getting lice.my family lives in bend, sisters, portland........

What do you keep them in for the winter up there? My mom was asking about the chickens, but with so many predators, and cold, she's not sure how to keep them, I think.


We got our coop from Celebrate the Seasons yesterday! Unfortunately the dimentions are off a little for it to be pressed up against the pen I purchased before hand. He is coming back on Sunday to trade it out for one that will work. I am really excited! D. had a fit of sticker shock, but I held my ground. After finding the buff out in the yard almost licked to death yesterday, and everything we went through last night and this morning, I think he's okay with them having a safe house. SHe still can't open her left eye, and since her equalibrium is off (can't see and her vent was bloody, might be deaf now) she cant' eat or drink. D. is taking her to work so he can keep her fed and watered while the others wait patiently for their coop to arrive.

to keep chickens in alaska you have to have a angled roof so the snow dosnt cave th roof in,you have to put a heat lamp nin there i keep mine on all the ttime in the winter month,give them cayyen pepper to keep them laying all year,use screen small enough that weasels cant fit through it and make a perimeter of electric fence around the coop to deter bears
my coop is like a small shed.you have to have the heat lamp to also keep the water unfrozen.
what did you do in hope?

my dad does stuff with hamm radios and outdoor survival, and if the end of the world comes we know where to go and how to get ahold of people with other radios Also junior high basketball, I believe. God I feel old.

adeechickluv welcome to the Oregon Thread. I'm in NE and I dont recall seeing any rain yesterday, West Linn must have been in a Rain clouds path. I admit Im pretty tired of all this rain too, I am so ready for summer. If you get a chance think about coming to our swap in Albany, I can't wait to put a fact to all these BYC names.

Well all today I got my Serama egg's in..12 perfect little eggs. I'm crossing my fingers for a good hatch, my last two have been horrible. I'll be using my little Brinsea Mini advance for these and hand turning I so want some of these little babies
