Salem, Oregon just passed a city ordinance so that people can keep 3 backyard hens starting this January. The fee for a license is $50.00. Not sure some of the other details, there are a lot, but you can go to www.salemchickens.com and there is a link for all of the "rules". I am out in the country so lucky for me, I can have as many as I want

My previous post was unclear -- I'm also interested in the cost of getting a "Specified Animal Facility Permit" in Portland.

Hi Sundari, in a quick google search for you I would try this link: www.portlandonline.com/auditor/index.cfm?c=28228 It outlines all of the rules for the Specified Animal Facility Permit but when I click on the link for the fee schedule, it looks like maybe the fee was appealed? The site should give you all the info. you need, there is a lot of information. Hope this helps!

Check the City of Milwaukee, OR a 'burb of Portland. I think they allow an amazing number of chickens and 'roos too. I want to move over there! My parents live in Galveston and they just passed an ordinance that allows 7.

Does anyone know a place year Portland, preferably on the West side, that will process chickens? Looking for a place that would be willing to process just a couple of chickens at a time.

My chickens are turning into ducks (and not the U of O kind)! My yard now has a water feature

The silkies haven't come out of the coop for days. I guess they are the smart ones.

Isn't that pretty smart then!? They know enough to come out of the deluge. The silkies don't even go out in a light mist. Maybe they can't find the door! ?

Thank goodness the silkies usually stay in cause really, what's more pathetic than a wet silkie!! They don't do the "drowned rat" look well

I have a few teenagers that insist on following me around the barnyard...silly birds.
