Just one more question, please!!!
Were they pullets or straight run?
Wilco in Stayton has the same breeds in, they arrived in the stores this morning. They were hatched and shipped from Privett Hatchery (at least the chicks in the Stayton store were) and are all supposed to be pullets but that is never 100%................

Thanks so much for that!
I know we would prefer to have pullets!!! Some hatcheries sex and some don't. Last year I got 8 straight run, and ended up with 5 (count'em 5!) roos

I am now toying with the idea of grabbing a few BAs for myself! My hen hatched 5 on Wednesday...maybe a few more, likely pullets would up my odds for layer replacement by quite a bit!
Thanks again!

I have a friend who had a rather unsuccessful hatch this week (one chick hatched out, yesterday). She had her heart set on some RIRs, and we live an hour from Newberg. She might be able to slip a few under her hen to keep the lone peep company!!!
Such a great piece of news!
We had no idea we could get chicks locally at this time of year!
Again, thanks a million!
No problem they are going to have chicks only im september so hurry up and enjoy i have i couple of RIR, and they are very good birds one of them gets out of the coop lays her egg in spot she made and then waits for me to put her back in the coop she is a sweet bird but anyways im glad to be helfull you are very welcome.

Ok, seriously, all I can think about is buying more chicks tomorrow!!! My hen just hatched 5 on Wednesday and she is a major mom, I know she wouldn't mind a few more!
My friend with the lone chick is also just flipping out at her house!
Our husbands are going to freak!!!
Chicken math!!!

I am just so psyched about having them sexed...Nature isn't always so pullet-friendly!

Also, there are fresh hatched chicks at the Oregon State Fair, and a VERY local hatchery representing their merchandise there with both chicken chicks and baby ducks. For at least the chicks in the poultry shed, I believe you could buy them to take home on the last day of the fair. Sunday? Monday? Not sure. But there was a little sign to talk to the people upstairs (right above the brooder). BUT ... the guy from the hatchery, Farwest Hatchery, he was awesome! And they are near Woodburn. He was in a different building ... the one with the quilts. They might be selling their display chicks, too. Lots of cuties in there! From what I understand, the quality of their birds is very, very good (spoke to a woman about that ... she is a poultry judge for the 4H).

Wish I were set up to bring a basket of ducks home!

Just a word to the wise. The state fair chicks in the poultry pavillion are priced way higher than you'd normally pay if you just went to Wilco. There was also not a guarantee on the breed you got and not a good Pullet guarantee either.

I spent all week there and gave everything a good twice-over.

I am, actually very intrigued with the new hatchery that was advertising in the other building. They seem to be doing quite well.

Hatchery is hatchery, though. So if you are looking for quality I'd find a breeder just to be safe. There is no guarantee that the chickens you get from hatcheries will be purebreeds either.

If you just want some chickens and aren't concerned with quality, I'd go with Wilco chicks. They are closer and cheaper. And Privett is a reputable hatchery for healthy chicks.

That seems to be the case with most hatcheries and Straight run. I'm convinced that's where they dump off the extra roosters. No way do you end up with 20 roos out of 25 like my friend ended up with. Nature don't work like that.

The average in nature is 50/50. My line throws 60/40.
