Why is regular chicken feed like Purina or Southern States (not medicated) not organic?? Sorry...this is the VERY FIRST thing I have ever asked about growing organically and I know nothing....but I will learn! :)

The grains used are not certified organic. They are likely GMO seed designed to withstand being sprayed with RoundUp, ie RoundUp Ready genetically modified seed. They may also have genetically modified ability to within certain pests. Beyond that, even if there were a small portion of the feed that was not GMO, still, the farmer that grew that corn or wheat or milo or oats or soybeans relied on chemicals both as weed killers and pest control with pesticides.

It is possible, if ever soooooo slim a fraction, that a wee wee bit of the seed was completely free of such things, still, the farmer and his farm may not have ever taken the steps to certify as organic. The possibility of this last example would be extremely remote. Purina buys feed grains by the train car load, many, many train car loads. They want good clean grain, no doubt, but organic certified it just isn't. Hope that helps.

TY yes...perfectly clear now...I didn't think about pesticides and weed killers probably being used on the grains! Stupid of me!! I live where there is a lot of agriculture. There is a yellow biwing airplane that flies over dusing crops ever so often. Who would have thought that the Eastern Shore of VA is mostly agriculture!!!
