Organic Feeding

Our first flock was fed Countryside Organics and they did great. We supplemented with their eggs, green leafy veggies, oatmeal etc. The present flock was fed Purina and the same supplements until we saw a definite difference in growth and health. The girls are on a local grain mill food now and are doing better. If cost was not a factor I would make my own or definitely feed Countryside Organics. Can't swear that the food made a difference between the 2 flocks because other factors are at play but organic and homemade is the way to go for 2 legged and 4 legged animals - humans included!

My chicks started on Dumor chick starter. (shutter) As they started laying, we went to a local farmer for a special 'mix'. Corn and soy included and LOTS of powder (I was told it was calcium) but never the less I was throwing away SO much! I then heard through the grapevine that they were a GMO farmer. Ughh! Found Countrysideorganics.com. Ordered their layer feed which cost $47 for a 50 lb bag with shipping from VA to NY. A LOT of money for chicken feed. I know. BUT as soon as I opened the bag and saw and smelled real raw seeds in their NATURAL and MINIMALLY processed form, I was hooked. I feed my 9 hens and 2 Roos in a large rubber dish (ground feeder meant for horses) so they all have a 'spot' at the 'table'. As SOON as I put it in, they ATTACKED it with VIGOR! Some of them had to stand IN the dish. They love it AND I find that they eat way LESS of this. I used to give 2 coffee cans twice per day. Now, I give 1 coffee can every other day. They do free range when I can sit with them which is usually only 3x per week. (We have a fox problem) Egg production is up and they look and taste amazing. I'm hoping to convince my local feed store to start carrying it to bring the cost down a bit. They do carry and organic crumble, but to me, you are altering and processing a whole food which is of less quality.
