Organic vs. Regular chicken feed...input?

it's all just a matter of opinion, but we go all organic. We don't eat any gmo or non-organic product, so I sure don't want my layer eating it either! The organic feed is readily available, so it's a no-brainer. My birds thrive on it.

I'm with Lazy J - the organic feed from our co-op is very expensive.

But they have some conventional feeds that are gmo-free and soy-free. They cost more than the conventional equivalent but not as much as certified organic. I think I'll give that a try with the hens.

I'm curious...what is everyone paying for a 50 lb. bag of feed these days?...conventional or organic...

thanks,
L

I pay $31.95 before tax for a 50 lb bag of Coyote Creek Organic layer.

My chickens free range on 3 acres and are fed lots of fruit, veggies and table scraps, too. I do notice a difference in egg color and flavor when they are on organic and they really do prefer it to regular layer crumbles. They won't even eat layer pellets.

I pay $31/80 lb. of organic soy free 19% grower mash. Layer is $27/80 & 16%. I get it at a local farm. Pretty much lasts my chickens as long as 100 lbs. of conventional feed. I would definitely buy non GMO if it was available.

We have a local feed store that is facilitating a group of us to buy In Season Farms organic feed. She will place an order every 6 weeks or so & sends us an email to notify us to place our orders. In Season Farms is located in Abbotsford, BC. I am able to purchase a 44lb bag of 16% layer mash for $19.80. I try to buy organic food for myself whenever I can & I want the eggs to also be organic. My biggest concern is GMO grains & if the bags are not labeled organic then I have no way of knowing what I am getting from a mill. I am very thankful that this feed store has stepped up to help us out!

wow, that's the best price I've seen. I currently pay $23 for a 50 lb. bag of layer which I think is a decent price, and worth it. My chickens forage over 1.2 acres, and don't eat much feed, so it works for me.
