yes, carr has given me a good start with them. these will be the only asil here as i have to keep as many pens for the cubalayas. but i like the idea of having a couple pens of these.

She (plucker mom) managed to put 18 eggs under her body. It took her almost a month to lay 18 eggs from this guy. with this weather (still snowing here on April 18), I hope she can hatch at least half of them. Will see......

IMO, 18 eggs is a lot of eggs but if she can cover most should be fine. Personally, and as once recommended to me, with that many eggs I would candle them at day 10, to check for development. Pull the clear ones, saving her energy to warm only the fertile ones.

Paulo, with my Asil on about 20 eggs, I'm going to take that advice, but I've always been kinda scared to candle as I don't want to mis-read and throw away any good eggs! Just a bit more advice on candling, please!

I would candle and look at the air cells. The older eggs should have a slightly larger air cell.

If you are not accustomed to candling, at days 7-10 only candle for "fertility". In other words, only pull the clear eggs.

But I understand where Clint is going with his advice. As the older eggs will be less hydrated, thus have larger air sac.

There is a lot of information on "egg development, candling chicken eggs, etc" on the net. Many sites have actual pictures that will give you an idea of what to look for. The key, IMO, is to use a strong led light. I have a little flash light that cranks out some 160 lumens that works very well.

You will get eggs that develop at different rates. When they hatch she will leave with the first few. It would be best to ONLY leave those which she can cover. Waiting for ten days will be pointless.
