Oriental Gamefowl Thread!

Looks like march the first was a good day for hatching Shamo in Oklahoma...these Ko started last night finished up this afternoon. Nate, we are almost neighbors, I'm in Skiatook

Answering on the color of the stag who is labelled "black red" - He's a black but carrying recessive wheaten, which is what causes that red leakage. It mimics brown red/black copper but it genetically is not.

Spangled x Black = black offspring with red leakage like the above mentioned stag. Mottling/spangling is recessive, and so is the wheaten base that makes the brown coloration.

Nice stags all though

However, black females with recessive wheaten often do not show it, and your blacks might possibly be such, so if you had such, and bred it to a spangled, you'd get 50/50 of blacks or darks/wheatens. No mottling though, but they will carry it.

I have two cocks I'd refer to as black reds, they're bred to Wheaten hens. The offspring that developed/hatched last year (though none made it, predators, power outages from the MS storms/tornadoes, etc) were about 50% solid black and 50% Wheaten. But, I wouldn't be surprised to get crele (one of my hens does show some barring, but since she is wheaten it is hardly noticeable), possibly a grey, or any other color the Jim Zook line throws if I bred enough of them.

God bless,
Daniel.

Very interesting Daniel, when I spoke to Mr Zook. I asked about the greys, he mentioned he had parted ways with them sometime back and had not been able to reacquire any. I have some fowl that are supposed to be out of one of his treos, would love to get a gray out of those? I have started a several lines from the hens I like the most and I am using just two cocks the other from William Roberts so similar blood. I really don't consider color when making the pairs but have not seen any grays in my chicks hatched so far. I however don't have the dept of knowledge of chicken genetic color thing to know how. I have seen every thing from blk, wide range of Dom, BBR, white in my chicks.

Finally got a chance to take some updated pics today.

Hello Sharon, he looks very well kept and I see some of the girls having a dust bath at his side. Any ideas on what his weight is, looks very nice and tall. Must say I wish his tail was a little more south bound but good news is I have seen improvement in the F2 and F3 generations. Glad to know you are happy with him, this next year he should start to come into his own.
