orloffer's Coturnix Quail Project

Have you discovered any that are definitely male yet?

Well, I can hear them so I know there are males but I'm still learning as I go and after seeing your pictures the other day I'm doubting my methods of determining gender now, lol. I could probably check the old fashioned way if they're mature enough to have the "foam" I've read about...

My males have not begun producing foam yet; I am not sure when they are supposed to. I have just been going by who I have seen crow.

How are your quail doing, @CluckNDoodle? Any updates?

I named the only one I know to be a definite female Eva:

The other females are likely to get names once I figure out which ones they are.

I still haven't discovered any more of mine that are definitely male. I hope I don't -- four boys out of 13 would be a great outcome -- but I probably will at some point in the nearer future. If any of them start fighting I will probably have to eliminate a couple of them, so I am not going to name any for now.

Still no eggs yet...I couldn't possibly have such bad luck that I have 12 males right??? Lol
It's finally starting to cool off so maybe that will help or I've even considered that since they're in a run next to my chickens maybe the chickens are stressing them out?

I have 100% decided that as much as I like them having dirt to run on, they 💩 waaay too much to rake it out, lol. So I'm thinking about doing layers of pine shavings, like a deep litter method in there and just clean it out once every couple of months maybe. Because it freaks them out when I rake, I put all of them into a container to rake it out and doing it weekly is a big task since none of them like me, lol! Fingers crossed my idea works!

If you have too many males, the hens won't lay due to stress. I would start separating out the ones you know are males.
