My son's first baby sitter's mom lives about 15 acres over me and has some cute little chickens. Her two young nephews came to me this morning with two little bitty eggs and said their mom's oldest hen died during the night (we had nasty weather last night!), and she had been sitting on two eggs for a really long time. They brought me the two little eggs and asked if I would try and hatch them for their Aunt because she was heart-broken over the loss of the hen.
I told them I didn't know if that would work if they had frozen over-night but we could put them in the cooler/bator my students made.
I just turned around and both eggs are rocking and rolling! I'm wondering how long the hen sat on them and if they might hatch tonight?
What should the temp be for them? I have no way of checking on the humidity in that cooler but I can watch them through the glass front and they sure are active.

The temp should be the same as for incubating, 101 for still air and 99.5 for fan. The humidity should be between 60 and 70% though, so maybe add a damp sponge so their membranes don't get too dry. The balancing act is not to get it too moist either though so the don't drown when they pip into the air sac. I don't have any clue how folks do it with no hygrometer. I think I remember speckledhen saying she doesn't measure humidity though, you might pm her. Good luck.. Keep us posted!!

Thank you, I'll do that. I really didn't think there would be much chance as cold as it was but when I saw them moving just a few minutes ago I'd sure like to see them survive for her.

I took the hygrometer out of the Emu eggs and put in there with these two,, it's really low and if I close the top totally it gets too hot! I whistled at them and they both get excited! Almost as excited as I'm getting!

I had a hed decide to leave her nest it minute her egg piped, I didn't have a bator or anything, I left it in the nest and made sure it was warm, it was warm outside though! It made it and as soom as it hatched I got it under a light, it turned out to be our new roo Solo!!! So he made it! I hope they make it for you too!
