I am wishing you good luck with the babies. I wish I was closer, I would help you with them. You are going to be busy!!

I hoped for a happy ending for your momma cat. While I took the time to share the best advice I've gotten from countless premier veterinary hospitals over the course of 20+ years (many rescues, many hospitals, many states - I always check with many sources before sharing advice - they all concur with the low dose aspirin every 3 days but never any other OTC products), what you do with it - or don't do with it is, of course , truly and entirely up to you. You needn't declare or defend your decision on meds to anyone.

Sadly, it turned out that momma cat's problems were a lot graver than pain alone in any case........ I am sorry to hear that she died. It did sound like she was in dire need of help. To die she had to feel as bad as it's possible to feel. What unfortunately often happens to unspayed female cats who have had multiple litters is that they get one of the reproductive cancers (this is quite rare in spayed cats). Having this litter may have been just enough stress to weaken her immune system and take the fight out of her if she did have cancer. Alternatively it could have simply been a fixable infection, treated early on. My heart goes out to her - I wish she could have the joy of basking in the sun right now. Very sorry it wasn't a happy ending.

Maybe she got into some poison some how, which the vet could not do anything for, might I add for those of you who have patronized Farmer Kitty. Maybe got ahold of a rat that had been poisoned or something. At any rate, it's done and I truly am sorry for the loss of your kitty.

im not trying to be mean, but if it was rat poison the vet could have pumped her stomach.

Could have, but from the description that Farmer Kitty gave of the cat, the poison (IF that is what it was) was already through out her bloodstream. In this case, pumping the stomach would not have helped.

For all of you who think you know what was wrong with the Mother kitty your wrong, or at least most of you are! It had nothing to do with the kittens. She was injured. She was not in some huge monumental pain like you are trying to make out or I would have put her down! Me not a vet. If she had been in that kind of pain it would have been cruel to wait the minimum of four hours it would have been before I could have gotten her to the vets. I found her at 4:30 a.m. this morning and the Vet office doesn't open until 7:30 a.m. to call and make the appointment. Due to getting a child off to school and having a ways to drive the earliest I could have gotten her there was 8:30 a.m. and that is if they could have fit her in that early in the day. They also could not have done anything for her injuries. I did not expect this kind of battery from people here at BYC and you should all be ashamed of yourselves.

For those who offered helpful suggestions, good luck wishes, and condolences-THANK YOU!!! The kittens are doing fine. Missing their Mother but, I'm sure will soon adjust to their three new mothers who will give them all the care and love they need.

This is a really interesting thread. First of all, I would like to extend my apologies for the loss of your mama cat. Losing any animal is always difficult. And of course you cared about her, you had her for 10+ years! I hope that the baby kittens thrive and have happy, wonderful lives doing what cats were meant to do.

What I really want to say however, is that we are a very diverse group of people here at backyard chickens. I think it would do us all a lot of good to remember that fact when we are posting. Now I am not telling anyone that they should change their opinions, or not say what they think. However, there are ways of expressing your thoughts that while getting them across clearly, also show respect and understanding for differences of opinion other than your own. On this forum we have the wonderful opportunity of hearing from folks who's life experience, philosophy and outlook on life may be different from our own. I think that is the best thing about backyard chickens. Just because one person has a different philosophy than you, does not mean that they are wrong/negligent. As long as the owner has the animal's best interests at heart, and cares about them, I dont think that their actions should be called into question on moral grounds. And really, any person who takes the time out of their day to post somthing about their critters here, should never be hinted at as negligent.

That is just my humble opinion. Take it or leave it, agree or disagree. But be considerate whatever you do.
