Farmer Kitty, my sympathies for your cat. This hasn't been easy and I feel for you.
Good luck with the babies!!

Thank you menageriemama and wegotchickens.

Anyone who is negligent isn't going to be broadcasting it to the world.

I hope that the kittens do good. Let us know how the kittens are doing. Im sorry if I said something that offended you.

It is just that I volunteer at a shelter, and foster pregnant cats who were abandoned, and cats with injuries and their owners just abandon them, and it really makes me mad when people do not have their animals spayed. In november I was given a litter with a mom and 5 kittens who were saved from death row in Brooklyns Animal Care and Control, then I took in an abandoned kitten who was the same age as the other kittens. She was covered with fleas, somebody just dumped her in a parking lot and left her. In the end, she died. She must have had a thousand fleas on her. I had to pick them off with a tweezer. Then when the mother cat got spayed, she passed away. Sorry for upsetting you, if I did. I am sure that you loved her and good luck with the kittens. They sure are cute!

Good luck with the little ones, sorry about Momma, you said she was 9, thats old for a farm cat, I'm sure he had a great life and is happy in the fact she was able to have her last kittens.

:aww I'm so sorry about the Momma Cat. At least she lived a long, happy life as a barn cat. I'm also sorry that some people were kinda being a bit harsh. I know that if I just lost a pet, I wouldn't want people criticizing how I took care of him and saying mean things about me. I'd want support and encouragement. Good luck with the kittens and please keep us updated on how it goes raising them!

Wow, I just read this post. I am so very sorry for your momma cat! She must have been highly loved! I know you gave her the absolute best life you could! Bless you for that! I, too, have seen unloved, uncared for pets, and I know from your post that you loved her. Her kittens are lucky to have you! They are such cuties, and it sounds like you have their care under control. Just a side note (the vet-tech in me requires me to ask) do you have them on a low heat pad? Keep them warm, that is important, but not too warm! I have raised many babies, some from 2 days old. Good luck, and post updates as they grow!!!! I love baby kitties!!!!

Oh, and I know spay/neuter is VERY important, but I also know some barn cats are left unaltered to keep the cat population proper on your farm. While I will ask to get the babies fixed, I know it is your decision, and will respect you for that! Congrats on the cuties!!! Steph

FK, in rereading this thread carefully, I think the people who took time out of their busy day yesterday to read your descriptions and genuinely felt that the cat needed help very urgently, deserve some defense. Please remember that you posted, presumably interested in opinions about what to do, and I'm sure most if not all opinions were sincerely given in the hopes of helping your cat. When people are urgently trying to help, sensing the dire nature of things, wanting to save the cat or at least spare it undue suffering, eager to reach you in time, their angst can come through in their writing. No reader would have been able to immediately tell from your earliest posts exactly how long the cat was in this condition, your ability or lack thereof to go to the vet, when you could get there, that you would put it down (vs. a vet) if need be etc etc etc. All the reader could glean was the fact that you said the cat was in bad shape and as it turned out, that was all too true. It only unfolded throughout the course of the post that you did not plan on getting the cat veterinary help, that you would put it down if you determined it was appropriate etc. - when suggestions were first offered by the readers, they did not know of your position on these things. To say the cat was not in bad pain before it died -- I'm sorry but to be injured or sick enough to die, a being has to be in a world of hurt. Cats just valiantly endure tremendous pain without making a fuss about it. That's what can make it hard sometimes for us humans to know they are in trouble early on. So no one would blame you for not noticing in the earliest stages of her injury/illness. No need to discount what she must have been feeling in order to be bad off enough to die.
Long story short, I wanted to say that people posting - most, if not all - really did/do care and offered their best advice they had to try to help your cat.
Now it's time to go back to the work that didn't get done yesterday in the hopes of helping your momma cat. Can't do this again today! Be well.

jjthink-some kept insisting even after I had said I would put her down if need be. Some kept insisting that it wasn't an injury even after I stated it was. That is what gets me. I'm the one that was with her and could judge what was going on with her not them. One was to the point that greyfields removed what was said and left a message about it not being constructive. I see that person has gone back in and removed what greyfields said. I had quoted that person and responded to them and greyfields also removed that. I will leave my post as stands.

Farmer Kitty, sorry about your lost momma cat.

That's a long time for a kitty to be around, especially in the barn situation.

I personally understand that you have to care about them or you would have just left the kittens out there to fend for themselves and gone about your business.

I also understand that it's not always possible or practical to go to the vet, especially with what they charge nowadays just to see the animal.

Good for you for caring for the kitties you have the best way you can. That's a lot more than some people ever think about doing.
