I belong to another group where I am thinking of doing a trade of my LF Lav. Ameraucana's for some Orpington eggs. Now my question is w/ hatchery stock orpingtons what colors do hatcheries normally carry? Is it just the buffs or do they carry all colors? Someone said they had B/B/S. I have asked them if there stock is from a hatchery or a breeder as I don't want hatchery stock.

Besides the following colors I have listed what other colors do Orps come in or do I have most colors covered? This is for standard size not bantam. Buff, Black, Blue, Splash, White, Lavender. I know there is chocolate but is that only in bantams right now or can you find them in standards as well?

Thanks

There are more colors, but they are not recognized varieties. Jubilee, Columbian, laced... There are also the English varieties and the north American varieties. Body shape is a lot different.

I don't think you will get quality chicks from a hatchery. But it depends on why you are getting them. Show, eggs, family pet, broody to hatch other eggs...

Chocolates can be found in LF but they are pricey. Greenfire Farms has them as well as a few other colors that are imported from the UK. I'm not sure I would do the trade since you really don't know if they are hatchery or not.

Black, Buff, White, Spalsh, Blue, Lavender, Jubilee, Calico/Mille Fleur, Mottled, Chocolate Mottled, Columbian, Buff Columbian, Lemon Blue, Chocolate, Cuckoo/Barred, Lemon Cuckoo, Blue Jubilee, Gold Laced, Silver Laced. Many of these varieties are only found in the UK. Hatchery quality chicks won't have show qualifications, as they breed more for egg and feritility production. If you can get your hands on eggs from UK stock, go for it!! UK stock are beautiful! Very large, heavily feathered birds. I think LF Orpingtons and Cochins are probably my favorite breeds by far
