Orpington "Project" The Golden Laced Boy Grew Up - New Pictures

It is really hard to say what he looked like as a chick. I hatch so many and the coloration did come out until he was older so I did not have him earmarked. He is the only one that has this coloration. I had some that were blue with some red in the wing area. I culled all except him.

Those are really neat. The first one looks like he has mottling or spangling, but I do believe I see some other gene showing thru in the left of the picture (down by his wing/lower chest area) similar to the pullets. The 2nd one I'm not sure about..maybe lacing. The 3rd pic could be pencilling, partridge or barring..I'm not really sure, but it sure is pretty. Maybe someone who works with those plumage patterns will take a look and help. It will be fun to do some test matings to see how the next gen turns out.

Yes, all three have some difference in the silver. The one pullet is mostly penciled, rooster is kind of mottled, and the other pullet has lacing but not the best I have seen. The offspring should be interesting. The pullets and the two black hens are all laying but to early to set eggs to be sure they are from this mating. I will keep you posted. I should have chicks from these in April if all goes well.

The buff/blue roo is still with the rooster pen. I have to wait until I have a suite available for him and a few ladies.

Currently hatching a bunch of chicks from the golden laced project. So far I am getting nice lacing but some strange differences in coloration.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Your gold laced male looks like he's on his way.

The silver/black birds are interesting but have a long way to go those in type. In what direction were you thinking of taking those? Are those birds you're using to make silver laced?
Personally, if making silver laced, I'd probably make golds laced first & go from there.

Do you have a plan for the buff X blue? I can't think of anywhere to go with that cross other than blue buff columbian or possibly blue/black tailed buff? While buff X blue is a pretty first cross it cannot be stabilised to breed true (even if one discounts blue, black & splash segregating out).

Thanks everyone.

Yes, the Golden Laced project is going very well and the rooster and several of the hen and pullets have nice type and lacing. However, these have been choosen from a hundred or so chicks and over 4 years of breeding.

Thank you for your information on the Silver Laced and Blue/Buff. I am in no way a genetics expert. I know I have a long way to go on the Silver Laced. The rooster is not real type for Orpington, has a funky comb and the hens just a not good layers. I do have a couple of pullets growing out but still a long way to go. Yes, I just read about making the silver laced from gold laced birds a few days ago. I just may have to go back to the drawing board on them.

As far as the Buff/Blue, I really was "hoping" that we would see his beautiful colors carry to his offspring. Sounds like from what you are saying it is very wishful thinking and they will not breed true. I have a hard time understanding how the genetics work once you get away from standard colors and blue is certainly tricky.
