I've noticed quite a bit of difference between the Orpingtons I've seen in photos and in person. It seems that some of them are very bulky while others are a bit longer and leaner. Is this due to a difference between hatchery and private breeding stock or are the more slender examples of the breed just younger?

Probably a lot of it has to do with the quality of the breeder. It could also be an age difference.

Mostly the difference in hatchery stock and good breeder stock. The young ones aren't quite as round and filled out, but not nearly as slim as some I've seen being sold.
