Orpington question?

Buff Orps are great... I love mine in fact the first one I got was in a mix of chicks. They are all reaching that age this spring when some will have to go... except for Buffy Marie and her black Australorp friend Elvira (or ellie belle)... These two ladies are the queens of the flock... they will live royally until they pass on...

I have 11 Buff Orpingtons and 12 Plymouth White Rocks. BOTH breeds are wonderful, although my WR's will be the first to jump in your lap. None of my girls mind being picked up and will talk to you the entire time you are holding and petting them. Grew up with leghorns and Rhode island Reds - which neither were friendly - almost convinced me that I never wanted chickens as an adult. HOWEVER, after having these two breeds, I am convinced I will never NOT have chickens. Most relaxing and wonderful time of my day is spent with my girls! Have had mine since the middle of May of this year and they are just sporadically starting to lay too!

There must be many Buffy Orbington's. LOL
My 2 year old is the one who takes over the young'uns at about 8-9 weeks. She has never been broody and is a really great layer. She is the boss of the roost though. I have 4 more coming up in time 2 should be laying shortly and 2 at the end of August.
She has an Americana who is a great buddy.
So I do not know about Leghorns.
Have fun finding out!!

our baby girls are so lovely, we love them and there sooooo sweet. love to come see me and eat from our hands, and my daughter and I hold them at times. as you can see my girls come to the door for treats LOL. there still young, soon they will give me great eggs to!

My buff orp is the sweetest chick, she's the only one of my 6 that would jump up and down wanting to be picked up! My brown leghorn has earned the name "Schitzoid" because she just squawks and runs frantically from us!

Mine went broody once each year for the past two years, not too often, just right to hatch some eggs. She was killed three weeks ago,

and her chicks were only 3.5 weeks old, I was afraid that the layers would kill them. She was my favorite hen, darn it, but one of the new chicks in a BO. so that is good, I love having a few in my flock.

I love Buff Orpingtons! Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, and Rhode Island Reds are my top favorite breeds. Buff Orps are really sweet, great layers, and are a beautiful golden color with big fluffy butts. Plus, Buff Orps like to hatch out babies! Mine have hatched chicks, ducklings, poults, and keets, all with high hatch rates! I'm never gonna be without my Buff Orps.
