Orpingtons ... different colors?

Hello

I am admiring Orpingtons ... and also reading the thread
"good breeds for kids"

Just wondering why Buff Orpingtons are SO popular when they are also available in beautiful blue/black/white/splash too? Is the Buff Orpington's personality very different from the other colors?
Or are they just the norm ... every supplier seems to have buff?

Buff's are what the hatcheries sale. So that what most people get.

well I have 13 chicks and only one of them is a buff orpington. If I could go back in time I think I would have gotten more, I'd like to go get more now but I think I'm maxed on chickens for this year.

A couple reasons why buff orpingtons are a good choice:
1) I don't know where you live, but I live in the pacific northwest, colder more dreary weather. Buff orpingtons are very tough against cold weather.
2) The buffs get to be a little larger than your average chickens.. I think the females can weigh up to 9 or 10 pounds. (might want to check that)
3) They lay eggs nearly year round, even when the daylight starts to lessen.
4) I've heard they're rather docile birds, not as aggressive as other breeds, just kind of a go-with-the-flow attitude bird.

They're a really cool bird, I think next year when I build my chicken mansion and increase my flock size to 50 I'll be picking up more orpingtons.

I have Buffs because they were what was readily available to me.
I also just love their adult feather color... their feathers in the sunlight shine like gold with strawberries and copper tints mixed in.

And their personalities are just amazing. Orpingtons and Brahmas are definitely the more "chill" birds of my group.

Most people get chicks from a feedstore or ordered from a hatchery, those places almost exclusively have buff and not the other color of orpingtons. If you have an incubator it makes it a little eaiser to get the colors you want without driving great distances to get other colors.

(I know every one has their own individual personality ~ but I just wonder if a blue or black is generally as nice as a buff)

I have Buff, White, Lavender, Black, Blue, & Splash colored Orpingtons. They are all super sweet in personality. Working on Golden Laced also and they are also sweet.

I only have Lavender Orpingtons, 2 pullets. I got them from a breeder on BYC, they are beautiful, very laid back and sweet. I hope to get more in the future.

I notice the difference in personalities more from the different strains...I have found Bamachickens orpingtons to be the friendliest (she is here on BYC and does sell eggs). I know a lot of a chickens "freindliness" comes from how much exposure they get to humans (i.e. treats hahaha) but I see some difference just on which strain they are from, just my own opinion
