Orpintons and eggs

My BO are 24 weeks old and no eggs yet. But their combs are getting nice and red. For an egg laying box I have two plastic tote boxes from the Dollar store. I cut out a nice opening in one side and put straw inside. With a top of the box, those plastic totes make good laying boxes.

That's a great idea! Do you stack them? I put some old cracked 5 gallon buckets on their side and proped them from rolling with cement blocks. I put in some golf balls too. The girls were wary about them, but the one I think is ready to lay was interested. This is so exciting!
I hope I am not at work when she lays.

I was late with my child by about four weeks and two inducements...I can't handle that kind of stress again!

good luck with your chicken nests.. and i know the feeling ... i've got 3 or 4 of my EE hens that keep checking out the nest that my leghorn is laying in.. one that's laying in there sporadically... a few days straight then skip a day.. i think it's only 1,.. lol.... but the coupld other girls i just know they've got to be close and it's driving me batty... lol..

I got to the coop this morning expecting and egg. but there were only golf balls all over the floor. They left one nest 'pan' undisturbed, and one lady was super interested in it. I was in the garden picking peppers when the 'I HAVE LAID AN EGG!!" scream erupted from the coop.

She didn't. But she got up and gave the golf ball a mighty peck. Good thing it wasn't an egg.
She sat in my lap and brrrked at me. poor thing. Then six more chickens came in and investigated the pan. and two sat in it.
I am almost hyperventalting. Who knew that this would be so...tramatic?! and then I am just going to eat them, I mean it's not like they are going to hatch!
There's something wrong with me. chicken fever. overly eggcited.

I'll have to blow it and get a shadow box and display it. if it ever gets here.

My BO started laying probably 5 weeks ago and she lays every day with my BR and my 2 arcaunas havent laid yet which is frustrating the heck out of me but my BO and BR lay every day and after about 10 eggs they take a day off and start back up right again and the arcaunas have no interest in eggs or boxes or egg laying whatsoever

I bet she feels better now...until tomorrow anyway.

It is a niced sized egg too! A medium, which for an BO might be small, but i am excited! Thankyou ladies for letting me know that it was comming as soon as it did! We would have waited too long!!

Thanks bcm7, I got more excited as the day rolled on. I am now actually getting something out of it, instead of just stuffing things in. I figure it is a 3 grand egg.
