Orscheln's employee LIED to me

I actually sent the family to the TSC because they had a pretty big selection of chicks still and I gave the dad my email address and this website so he too could learn things. He sent me an email this morning and told me that he came home that night and read up on different breeds on this forum, the next day he went to TSC and got 2 RIR's and 2 Black Australorp.

I sent him pictures of my coop and he asked me for plans for something on a little smaller scale so I sent him the link to the ones on BYC and he said he will look into that.

This site and forum are great, im so glad I stumbled upon it

I will continue to bring more and more members here to learn and share with all of you as you have done with me.

FYI, TSC is notorious for mislabeling chicks and their employees rarely have any clue about them. Unless you have a really stellar local store, I recommend not buying chicks there.

Yeah I have read that on here and he was warned, he actually printed pictures of the chicks and more info than he needed at the store lol. He said his father in law went with him and new what they were, the guy at TSC tried to sell him a $300 brooder for his 4 chicks though lol, I guess no matter where you go you will meet people that are just trying to sell things and knowledge beforehand is the only way to avoid getting roped into buying something you dont want or need.

On a side not, these Cornish X chicks are growing like CRAZY lol. Its amazing to see the size difference in just five days when compared to the little RIR's about the same age.

So I went to Orchelns yesterday to pick up chicks for my wife because she wanted some "babies" since I brought home 4 almost POL hens and 2 EE Roos a couple weeks ago. She wanted some so my son could see them raised from babies and was too impatient to wait on hatching our own eggs when the chickies decide to start laying loll.

The store only had 4 RIR babies which is what she wanted, but next to them were 2 full bins of "Cornish Cross" chicks that were a little bigger and cute lil yellow fluff balls lol. So I ask the lady about them because I know nothing of CC chickens, she says " they are some of the best domestic chickens you can get, they will lay brown eggs for up to 3 years" so of course I was like ummm OK I do like brown eggs lol. We bought six of them, then I get home and look them up just to find out they get really big really fast and they are usually ate at 8-12 weeks

Dont get me wrong I dont have any problems processing and eating them, ( the wife will never touch that meat lol ) but I am kinda upset that the lady straight lied to me. In other conversations we had there she seemed VERY informed on chickens, chicks, ducks, feeding poultry, heat lights etc etc so I dont know if she was just trying to get rid of them or what.
I doubt the employee really meant any harm; as an employee it wouldn't matter to them if these particular chicken are sold in one week...or three. I’m sorry their words made you change your mind and buy chickens that you really wouldn't normally buy. 😋
