OT-Satellite internet???

I have wildblue through DirecTv and have been happy with it. the only other service is dial up here in the forest, although we have petitioned Embarq to set up DSL for us, I don't think they are running to accomadate us forest folk though. I called for Hughsnet but only Wildblue was offered to me.

I also have hughesnet thanks to my sis. She moved in with me last Oct. and works from home and needed high speed. She purchased a commercial dish from them (not cheap) - I just had dial-up - high speed sure is nice! P.S. I don't have to pay for it either!!! LOL

All I know is my parents have Hughes net and they hate it!!! They are locked in contract so they can't get rid of it yet. It's constantly going out and very expensive.

Do you have cellular coverage at your location? If you do using Verizon's, Sprint's or Cingular's 3G network will give you pretty good speeds. It 'might' be an option for you.

I also have crappy dial-up, and my speed is usually 28.8 (doesn't make sense on a 56k modem, but it's NEVER faster than 28.8!!

) Hubby really wanted faster, I wanted faster. My father is 1mi away and has DSL, my sister lived in the same town, 5mi away and had DSL. I looked.. and it isn't here yet! And I've been waiting and waiting..

So I checked about HughesNet also.. holy cow! Hubby works hard so I can stay home, but we don't have a ton of luxuries (had to make sacrifices somewhere). To me, internet is a luxury, although I miss it when it's not here. Anyhow, I checked out Hughesnet.. and at that time you could either pay like $600 to start, and then $60 a mo for 15mo, or you could pay $100 to start and then $100 a mo for 15mo. WOW! I can't imagine paying that much every month to feed my internet addiction! So for now.. we stick with Dial-up. I'm sure the prices will come down significantly in the future, so I'm willing to wait.
Note: I worked for a call center, and they had that T1 connection type.. not sure exactly what it is but wow it was SO very fast. I could multitask and it never slowed down a bit. I loved it! Every page just opened right up with no waiting time at all!

We have a wireless connection. Microwave I believe.

750K down 128K up was $40
1.5mb down and 528k up is $60...

We have a flat panel about the size of a dinner plate on the side of the house. Not sure if there is a company in your area but there are 2 in my area in themiddle of no where Indiana....

Like you Meghan, a mile up the road from us people have DSL - we checked on DSL before she moved in and Bell South told us we wouldn't get it anytime soon. I don't understand that because we've had a major population explosion here... (much to my chagrin)

I only have the option of satellite and I went with Direcway that is Hughesnet now. I had to go with the pro version to get the speeds I was happy with. Vonage still will not work with it. Wow.. there are alot of people that have problems with hughesnet. I better knock on wood then. Right now im up here posting, playing a game on pogo.com with my daughter (she is on her pc in her room), listening to radio on my yahoo messenger plus printing off some recipes for the weekend...lol... im excited i finally got something that wasnt a dud,, we spent 5 grand on a new a/c unit this past week and it died already..we arent happy. The guy is replacing tomorrow, I hope. OOO forgot to mention my daughter is also on her yahoo and listening to music and my hub is on his playing canasta and watching basketball . We HAD the local dialup...I could get up and do stuff while waiting for it to pull stuff up. This is the only highspeed we can get. It does slow down a bit when we have bad weather. It goes from excellent to very good. But still does what we need. Only time it doesnt work is when we have hurricanes,....which i expect that..LOL.. so im doing a dance and knocking on wood right now
