Thank you everyone for the good wishes and advice:)
Little bit's still hanging in there, looking a bit better today. I'll keep you posted.

Sumi, I have to commend you on what you're doing, I think it's great you care so much, like theoldchick says. Keep up the good work, and I wish you AND your chick the very best of luck

Unless you're in an extremely rural area, it shouldn't be too hard to find some over the counter antibiotics - check out pet stores or the pet department of general merchandisers like walmart or target -- they generally sell them in the fish, bird, and small animal sections. You usually can find penicillin, tetracycline, and sulfa type antibiotics of various types. And, if you have a farm and feed type store around like Tractor Supply Company or Quality Farm and Fleet, they will have a large selection of antibiotics in the livestock section.

Thanks for your support and advice:)
I live on the outskirts of a small town (population about 15 000 for the whole town and area area) in South Africa. The nearest big town is just over 30 miles away. And my notoriously unreliable car packed up again (I'm thinking of selling her and getting more chickens). Luckily I have an animal loving vet here who is as determined to help the little one as I am. He's going to get me some medicine tomorrow. He was very upset yesterday after speaking to the farmers and spent the whole morning trying to get some antibiotics. And he's not charging me for any of this. He is a true blessing.
Baby's outside enjoying the sun. She was running around earlier, but the older chickens were bullying her a bit, so I put her on top of a table and the others are banned from jumping up. When she's better I'm going to move her to the chick pen.
We've decided to call her Hope.
People's attitudes towards chickens really sucks around here. I think it's because it's so difficult to get chickens, so not that many people keep them. You are either a dog person or a cat person, so if you say you are a chicken person everyone thinks you're crazy. I don't care, I love my birds:love

I also care for the sick, weak and injurd chicks at work, and when we run out of tanks I set up the infirmary at my home. I have only lost one, and was very sad. No one at work could understand. Most of the people that come in, and have chickens tell me, just do the dirty deed and end it's misery.

I usually have them up, and doing good in a few days. They just need quiet, TLC, and food and water, and lots of protein.

Sad that people feel they are dispensable. Good luck with your new little girls !!

quote Fish mox is pure amoxicillin and it is the same generic amoxil given at the pharmacy. I have used it on my cat for an absess and it worked better then the vets amoxicillin. You can buy it online or at pet stores. Just a thought.

I keep Fish Mox around for dogs and was wondering if anyone has anyone used it for their chickens? How do you decide to use it? Is it safe for chickens? How much to give?

Where there's life there's hope.
Sounds like you have a wonderful job. Tell me more?

Have you read Charlotte's Web? Your story reminds me of the little girl begging her dad not to kill little runty Wilber. To him, it was just a runt pig, and everyone all the way around would be better off without it; that's a fact of life to most farmers probably. But to her, it was a little living creature. I think she even said something like "If I'd been born too small would you have killed me too?"
I don't hold it against that person for feeling that way personally, but it was certainly wrong of him to keep questioning your big hearted efforts toward the little chick...made him sound like a callous jerk
