Our 1st Australorp chicks!

We have our first two little Australorp chicks this morning! My hens are two years old and we just added a rooster a month ago. He got right to work and made our broody hen a happy momma! She is being super protective, but I was able to lift her off to see the babies for a moment and check for more pipping. I decided to do an all natural hatch with this bunch and let the hen do her thing. We did lose the first chick to try to hatch yesterday. I found the egg outside of the nest, so momma hen knew there was something wrong with it. After investigating, she pipped on the wrong side of the egg and never made it out. Sad, but the two new babies that hatched this morning made up for it. My kiddos are getting a great education!

I love letting hens raise chicks because there is a lot you can learn from it and less work for you!

sometimes I let my hens hatched, but my concern here is, the hen sometimes scratching ground for food got little chicks kicked which some have deformity while some died. but the kiddos learn lots from their mama (hen).

Fantastic! I have three BAs and hope to have a broody next spring to turn the miracle of eggs into the miracle of baby chicks. Way to go, you and momma!

2 days after the first chick hatches I make sure mom is getting off the nest, and I remove all left over eggs, checking to see if any are still alive and just behind in incubation.

Am happy for you and the chicken. How wish I gave this species.
