our 2 turkeys have curled up feet and have a big trouble walking

hi everyone,
i have 2 newborn turkeys who are 2-5 days old. both of them have one foot which the toes are curled up which means they dont have the ability to walk properly. any advice would be great, thanks.

Hmmm. I don't really know much about turkeys, but I know that sometimes chicks feet will be malformed from being in the egg in a weird position. Is there anyway you could splint the feet. I see people use a small piece of paper or cardboard and a piece of sticky off of a bandaid or tape to keep the toes splayed right and the foot bent correctly. So you might want to look at that and then give it a shot. Give some water soluble vitamins if you can as well. Can't hurt, might help.

I just tape their feet to duct tape and make them little shoes. Only takes a few days and the toes are fixed.

If you perform an advanced search on BYC (Spraddle AND leg - or - Curled AND toes) you'll find a lot of info (remember after entering TItles/Posts only and search terms -- use the SEARCH BUTTON at the Bottom of the screen).

You can also give the poults Polyvisol Enfamil (without iron formulation) liquid vitamins (three drops a day for a week and taper off) - sometimes the cause is related to deficiency (but not always).

curled toes come from not enough moisture when they were in the egg
not to much you can do with them. If using incubautor when hatching eggs put in a small can of water this will stop the curling of the toes

Can also result from: too high a temp during incubation/genetic propensity - mostly in commercial broad breasted - poor maternal nutrition. We managed to not only straighten out the toes of one BBB poult, but braced legs (pipe cleaners and paper surg. tape) as well - guy actually walked normally at four months of age - then he flew off the back deck and revealed that the tibial dyschondroplasia had only temporarily been contained (had to put him down). However, other members have reported that toes return to normal position and retain full function after early intervention.

I have a turkey that's not walking he's 20 month old and now his feet are all curling up he was fine a week ago now he's just getting worse. Any ideas on what it could be. And no it's not bumble foot
