Hey Peeps,
So our turkey's still sittin' on her nest, about 3 weeks in, they should hatch out in another week or so. Since she is the only turkey and thus has no support system from other hens she doesn't leave the nest, so we supply food and water right next to her so she can keep on keepin on!
We have SO many wild turkeys around here (California's Sierra Foothills) that when she disappeared for about a month I'm sure she must have got with a wild boy, we'll know in about a week or so, if my calculations are correct, if they are fertile. We do not however have wild turkeys that call our property home base, so it is quite unlikely that she stumbled upon a wild nest and took it over, she and the wild hens do not get along and I can't see her winning out against the wild hens for their nest, plus it's about 25 feet from our home (down ther hill at the base of a large pine).
I will take picture's if she doesn't split and go to ground for awhile, when they hatch. I believe she feels safe here or wouldn't have come back to nest, but it may be a different story once the poults are hatched.
Thanks for your interest and advice, as ever, anything is welcome as I am new to the unintentional breeding part of chickening.
I don't know how to check the fertility, someone suggested that if they really are hybrids then they will all be male. I'm not even sure of the sex of the chicks/probably not poults yet. I'll ask BYC'rs for their advice on our half dozen misfits a bit later. Right now they look like BR's with maybe some 'Cana crosses. Sorry to be a dummy! And oh yeah, our turkey's a Red Bourbon, the bronze's ended up to be meat birds

and we had to slaughter them because they had difficulty moving around and we didn't want their legs to break, bummer. In memorium to Jean~Luc Picard and Turducken, kid named 'em...
Thanks, Kararae
