Our Buckskin Mare

You mean inches?

I had the same question. Everyone I know says 15, 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, 16, etc when talking about hands. And, she is beautiful.

Yes, thank you denim deb! I had written inches but went to delete a part and apparently forgot to proofread! Thanks!

Sorry, about the confusion. She's about half a hand shy of 16, so not sure how to say that. That's what I was told anyway. I thought 15.5 meant 15 and half hands. So, maybe you horse folks can tell me the way to actually say that correctly. I'm not sure where she was ridden in the Civil War Reenactments. I've only had her about three months. I use her to trail ride. We can ride for miles around here. There's tons of trails and our neighbors grant us permission to go across their lands too. We have a 47 acre pasture, and she'll come right up to me when I want to ride her. Willie my neighbor worked her for me before I rode her. He wanted to make sure she was safe and also sound. She hadn't been ridden in 4 yrs before coming here. So we weren't sure how she would act. She was originally trained on barrels so, when you ask her to turn she'll turn on a dime, and give you a nickels worth of change.

She's the first horse I have ever owned. We had a pony growing up, but this is a whole new world. I hadn't ridden anything in years before Trixie. I'm glad all of you like her. Buckskins are my favorite color, and I had always wanted one like Matt Dillon's horse on Gunsmoke. Now, I have one.

Ok, if she's 15 and 1/2 hands high, you would write it as 15.2 hh. 15.1 would mean the horse is 15 hands, 1 inch. 15.2 would be 15 hands, 2 inches, 15.3 would be 15 hands, 3 inches, then it would go to 16 hh.

And I'm jealous. If I want to trail ride, I have to trailer Misty someplace.

So two inches is half a hand? What if the horse is 15 hands and 4 inches tall? It is automatically 16 hands.

How come it's weird? I mean...a hand is 4 inches. Back in olden times, nobody would walk around with a tape measure in their pocket to measure a prospected horse. You've got your hand right there...most peoples are 4".
