Our chickens as of 2025

Songster
I meant to do this post sooner but a lot has happened since the idea came to mind. I am still grieving the chicks I got killed and just recently, I got a clutch of 4 eggs killed on day 16 because I moved nests on a late broody(like, just the stall beside her but she be stupid I guess, she pooped heavily near the original nest so I move her eggs over but she decided to sit empty on the original nest 😭)
I was also quite busy with a job and canceled plans on top of cancelled plans so my life is chaos right now. I also missed the chickens I lost dearly, and still upset about this season’s failed clutch from my first broody, but because I have a day off on Easter and so, free time, I should find an outlet to cope, so I’ve decided to write this post. Mostly for myself but also, anyone is free to comment.

Format: name, important detail, personality, appearance. I prioritize funnier pictures first.

"Golden". The only rooster we own. A lil sh** to humans but fine and a good gentleman to the hens I guess. Golden head to neck, black body with laced chest. Yellow striped wings, iridescent tail. Typical rooster package.

"Red". Friendly to me and dominant to other chickens. Tolerant and willing to approach me, she's my current favorite. Red-brown with a tie on her right leg.

"Stripey". Sassy, hissy, bold and yet, flighty still. I love her for her unique personality, appearance and her productivity. An egg per day like the other leghorns 👀
Mottled, striped brown with salmon breast.

And also above. "Speckles". She has mottling on her chest. Looks quite similar to Stripey but personality quite different. Flighty, skittish and much much speedier, she is also more orange and doesn't have stripes like Stripey. Both of them are very light and thin, like Sunny, so I've concluded they're all leghorn type.

"Sunny". Curious, inquisitively bold but still pretty flighty and very capable of doing flips, she's very similar to Stripey and Speckles, but she's pure white(originally anyway, not much could have prevented her from rolling in mud on rainy days 😐)

"Summer". My only surviving Wyandotte...more expensive than two other hens combined. Skittish and clingy to the rooster. I still have no idea how I would acquire another like her but I love the pattern. Black laced brown. Maybe the only Wyandotte I'll ever have at this rate. Purebred is SO expensive!

"Shady". Speedy, flighty. She like to lurk. But just a regular ol' hen. All black feathered with white stripes from face to neck.

"Snowy". Now the shyest, lowest ranking hen. She's usually in the shadow, alone or something.

Chicken card_20250420160112.png

"Butter". Ex-broody. Golden Comet. Calm, reserved, probably less upset about her dead eggs than I am. Yellow with a tie on left leg.

Chicken card_20250420161158.png

"Nugget". Biggest Golden Comet in the flock. Friendly, tolerant. Not cuddly but other than Red she's the only other chicken who would allow pets. Would do anything for food. Dirty yellow with matte feathers.

“Brown, Mocha” I can’t tell them apart. They are two Isabrowns that aren’t fond of me.
Chicken card_20250420161753.png

”Orange”. Isabrown. Not fond of me. Orange colored for some reason.

5(?) unnamed Golden Comet. Unique looking bunch but usually move as a flock and I don't have any nickname for them yet. Lays terribly lol, very fat and lazy.

Pretty bunch but not note worthy.

I plan to post more on this thread, as I felt guilty not posting about my chickens and especially the broody hen more. I would've not made so much dumb decisions if I posted it on social media...honestly should've ask about how to keep broody because my first kept her eggs to near hatching date before I got her eggs killed. I think anyone would've told me to not move the nest. Oh well 😢

I'll try to consult the Internet more.

We JUST brought home 20 more chickens and 6 more ducks!

While buying from private breeders or hatcheries is best, breeders swap is most convenient and cheap. Many hatcheries sell here like that anyway, it’s just a culture thing? But swaps are definitely different here. So crowded and I barely was able to talk to sellers x4

But parents still manage to buy 17 pullets, probably 18 weeks? Idk point of lay basically.

We were going to buy all white leghorns but fate be funny. Last year there were tons, and this time, it wasn’t until late(around over half way)of the gathering we spotted some, and at that point, parents already bought the first pullets they laid eye on exactly like last year lmao. Anyway they bought 17. Various colors, I have no idea there’s breeds or not but probably CzDominant Hybrids mix.
All from same seller. 9,50€ a pop. They spent 160€. Quite a bunch of pretty gals though.
IMG_2451.jpeg

I bought four 16 weeks old for 8€/one. Ignore that barred one, the rest is mine.
IMG_2440.jpeg

Honestly none of today’s haul is purebred lmao. The all leghorns plan crumble.
And I bought 6 ducklings. All unknown breeds, 5 same sellers, 10 weeks to 5 weeks old? iirc. 8€ per for the two big ones and 6€ for the three small ones. One from a seller who just has two Wyandotte and this fuzzy black and yellow duckling which I bought for 7€.
IMG_2446.jpeg

Hopefully all will lay well. I’ve done my research, asked questions, and I believe the sellers. While I wanted point of lay runner ducks, I was a bit rushed and only saw a male/female pair before leaving. These are clearly mostly females so I compromise.

Population is 40 chickens, actually. Gosh, I’m terrible at math. 19 old chickens+(17) 18+ weeks old+(4) 16 weeks old, I think. Yeah should’ve only add up to 40.

Still 8 ducks. 2 pigeons.
2 Adult runner ducks, 5 unknown breed ducks and one still all downy unknown sex duckling that actually, I think is a purebred runner duck. Up to standard head shape, body shape and overall very beautiful. Also they rarely crossbreed to keep the stance so actually we do have one purebred 😂 not like I’m going to breed them so it shouldn't matter but then again, I have an incubator...shrug. If I’ll breed them breed doesn’t matter anyway, I’ll never sell my poultry. So purebred status doesn’t matter to me but we would have a trio of pure runners then if the duckling ended up being a drake.
I will only bring in, never bring out anything. So up to standard doesn't matter, they do look goofy and lay very well, but it’s a whatever(I like variety, not just production and appearance alone)

I hope to make 3€ per day for my 10 hens and my whole fam want to make 100€ per month from eggs. Though I want to raise and hatch my own chicks it’s not very profitable...compared to buying pullets.

Unfortunately the goal of keeping chickens shifted from pets with benefits to livestock, which means any that shows signs of unliveable problems like bumble foot, severe respiratory distress, sour crop and egg bind,(and etc)will most likely be straight cull, which will be sad if it’s a favorite, so I don't get to bond with ones that aren’t in the “important, leaning toward being pets” group. Which is only allowed to be small.

At least if they don't get any health problems, got old and/or stop laying well, they won’t be automatically culled. If not one Golden Comet or even several would be dead already lmao she produces like, 1 egg a month.

Ducks are still just pets with benefits, we still have funds for helping their health if any problems arise. If culling, they may become soup, their meat worth more than chickens’ which doesn’t worth the effort of butchering, in my parents opinion. Also ducks is hardier and live for longer and their eggs are hard to sell so they’re just my beautiful decoration for now :)
Because I can’t touch them LMAO ALL OF THEM ARE SO SKITTISH.

I’m going to use this thread to post about all of my poultry from now on. Making a new thread for posting about my grow out seems unnecessary and they are my chickens of 2025 anyway. I will also mention about my ducks occasionally but this thread seems appropriate for info about my animals.
