Oh, I hadn't thought of covering the nest boxes. I'll suggest that. And he has decided to add the wood slats to the ramp.
As for climate. We're in California, about 30-45 minute drive from the coast over small mountains in the Bay Area. Our winters don't get too terribly cold and our summers are pretty mellow compared to other areas of CA, but we do get some high temps. We designed the roof with ventilation in mind because we can't run a fan out there if it does end up getting too hot for them. The "ceiling" is hardware cloth with the hinged roof holding in insulation panels now that it is winter.
Our next step is to paint. DH is going to paint the roof white I believe. Then my kids and I are going to paint the rest. It'll probably be about half murals. We have this interesting pirate gypsy theme around our place, so it'll likely have some of those elements.
Thank you for all the compliments and suggestions on the coop. DH used to do construction and has been aching to build after a few years of working as a photographer. He did the whole design himself after listening to me describe what sort of elements it needed plus perusing pictures on BYC. It's been a sort of learn as he goes kind of thing, which has been fun for me to watch.
