Sorry have been out of town. I think you will need to have it deeper than 6-8 inches. My chickens are good at digging holes and all their scratching will bring them down to the wire in no time. A wire "skirt" out about 2 ft all the way around and either buried or covered with a thick layer of mulch should take care of the predator problem.
