We had several dogs that did the same thing and one died of multiple heart attacks before vet decided it would be best to put him down, it was agony for my mother. I lost my Borzoi due to heart failure, ruptured aorta valve and the blood clot worked itself loose and killed her instantly.
Sometimes heartworms can do them in too but the weak signs would have been there.
