Our Dog saved our flock

I loved reading this story first thing on the computer this morning. He is a good old boy and deserves a special treat for his heroics. It would be really interesting to hear his other stories!

Since you asked.... One morning last year just at dawn, Herbie jumps up from his bed beside ours in the Master Bedroom and walks rather quickly out to the front window and starts barking with his "something is wrong" bark. So I got up and followed him - this was unusual as he gets up when we do. He wanted out so I let him out the front door and he went to the middle of our front yard and kind of went on point towards the northwest. He just stood there and kept up that bark so I kept looking hard through the desert to see if some odd animal might be there, like the folks who live about 3 miles from us have Emus and they occasionaly get out and come this way! Remember, we dont have neighbors close up. Our town has a minimum 5 acre lot size and most folks have more. Anyway, over the trees starts rolling black smoke about 20 acres over. Herbie smelled the smoke from inside our house before it got 30 feet in the air! I called the Fire Dept and within 10 minutes a news heleocopter was over head. It took about 15 or 20 minutes for the first fire truck to arrive.

It was kind of a mess because we live in an area surrounded by mountains, the road is a single lane dirt road and everyone either hauls their water or has a well. Someone was smart enough to call for the water delivery Co. to have extra water trucks waiting at the end of the road. They hold 2500 gallons where as a fire truck only holds 500. No firehydrants in our area - heck we don't even have water lines!

Herbie saved the day again because the neighbors were still asleep when the fire broke out so their first thought was to get their children then pets out then get to the barn to save the horses because the fire was spreading so fast. It was electrical so they couldn't even call for help cause their phones were out.

Their house was a total loss but everyone was safe and the whole desert didn't burn down. The fire dept was able to contain it to just a few acres. I guess my call was the first one in to 911 - All because of good ole Herbie!!!

. I just don't think chicken would be appropriate at this time.

Yay for Herbie. We have an assortment of dogs, and have a herbie looking one named Scoobydoo. But he's a real chickenheart. He might bark tho

Go Herbie Go

Wow, what a great dog! My dog would probably dart out to the coyotes and then when she gets out there she would probably help them get in to the coop!

I have some very sad news to report. Our very loyal friend, who just happened to be a dog, passed away October 4th. I started this thread last June to brag on him and now reading it again it is the perfect eulogy.

What an incredibly difficult two weeks we have had. It started Thursday, October 2nd. Coyotes came into the yard, 2 diverted Herbie and the young Danes the other went straight for the barn and killed my best layer and most friendly hen. We were also dealing with the grief of a close girlfriend dying at the young age of 48 from a very rare form of cancer. Her funeral was Saturday, October 4th. When we returned home from the Church, we found Herbie dead. He was very old and bless his heart he just layed down and died. Since then the Coyotes have ravaged us. They attacked our female Great Dane and ripped her front leg apart, Our male Dane has been missing since Sunday and they killed our only rooster, a beautiful EE just yesterday morning right in the barn.

Someone posted earlier "There is no substitute for a good dog" How true it is.

Thanks again for listening.

Three final cheers for Herbie, the best dog in the whole wide world!
