Our Dog Was Shot

Well, I now know to never post a story about any other pet other than my chickens. Wait, I just might be berated for that also.

Everyone who is just trigger happy instead of calling animal control or going to the owner first just has a cold heart to me. My dog is not mean, menacing, there are not cattle, or any other poultry around us. And I never said for sure that he went into someone's yard. He may have been in the woods which are right behind us.

I am an owner who has a fenced in yard. I said that he has learned to jump it and that we are in the process of rectifying the situation with a taller fence that is a privacy fence.
I for one would never think about shooting another dog. I would call animal control or go talk to the owner. My husband and I are not trigger happy as some of you seem to be.
I am glad I do not live you all who would just shoot before contacting the owner. If I thought for one minute that my dog would harm another animal or person he sure would not be a reading dog for children, or go to the nursing homes to visit the elderly. And I sure wouldn't let him play with our neighbors dogs.

This will be my last post on this subject. Thank you to all of you who gave my Shadoe well wishes.

It really doesn't matter where Shadow was as he wasn't contained in your yard. He may not intimidate you but after seeing his picture many people would be scared of him if he were running up to their kids or skulking around them. He's a dog of a breed with a strong prey drive so it wouldn't be beyond belief that he could have been doing what comes naturally to him. You weren't there to see why he got shot. Why not just take your lumps and say "wow I blew it. I didnt' contain my dog and he got shot" instead of giving a litany as to why he "just wouldn't harm anything". We'd still offer our sympathy's and well wishes for your dog.

I do not think I "Blew it". And I still believe that people should call animal control or come to the owner before taking it upon themselves to shoot an animal. And he does not look intimidating, he is just a dog! And it does matter where he was IF he wasn't in someone's yard, if it was in the woods right behind our house, then they have no right to shoot!
I took my lumps as you call it when he came back into the house bleeding and I had to rush him to the vet! I didn't post this story for you or others to berate me on how it was my fault. I was upset and worried about my dog so I posted the story.

While they are trying to find the owner or waiting for Animal Control to respond, if and when they ever do, the dog in question may be causing havoc. At this time of year many people have goats, cattle and sheep ready to give birth at any time. The stress of having a dog running them will cause them to miscarry. I love dogs as much as the next person, but if someone lets their dog run loose to cause havoc amongst my animals then I am going to put a stop to it. If I give it a second chance I am giving it a second chance at killing my animals. I can't afford to lose animals due to someone else's negligence. As far as I am concerned if they were that concerned about their dog they would know where it was at all times. If I wanted another dog around I would buy one and train it, I don't want someone else's carrying on however it feels fit around my livestock.

Like I said there are no farm animals around us. With that said, I DO NOT let my dog run loose. He is very well taken care of!

Melissa, people comment to say whatever is at the tops of their heads - they don't know you at all, so please don't be extra-saddened by some posts.
Most of us are very sorry your furry friend had to go through pain and trauma, as did you and your hubby.

so sorry to hear about your dog. Hope he's feeling better.
I think the neighbor should have shot a warning shot first. I have had rabbits killed by strays (this neighbor let her dogs run for weeks) but also know even with invisible fences, fences, leashes, kennels, and what have you occasionally things happen and dogs get out. I can see if the dog was at the neighbors all the time or running deer or was in the process of killing something but if they shot it just because it was around and they never saw it before thats kind of sad. I know sometimes dogs can be like members of peoples family.

i didnt read the whole thread but another option is to run a single strand of hotwire around the middle of your fence. that way he'll pop up onto it once and never again.

Sorry to hear what happened. We used to have a Siberian husky also. He would not have harmed anything/anybody; HOWEVER, as he sat on the front step with that black mask on his face and his piercing blue eyes, there's no way on this planet that ANYBODY who didn't know him would attempt getting close to him. Face it, they look fierce. It's possible that your neighbors thought he was a wolf or coyote and acted accordingly. Too bad, because they're almost all sweet dogs.

I hope the property of the owner who shot the dog is okay. It's a terrible thing to have to shoot a dog, and no one should be berated for having been placed in a position that forced them to make that decision.
