Our Dog Was Shot

I am soooo sorry you pet wa shot!! BUT as you said you have strays all the time. Some one is just fed up with strays. Unfortunately it was shadow and not a stray. Personally I have lost 9 nanny goats and 4 kid goats to neighbors sweet loving gentle pets. that even though they came home covererd in blood would never do anything wrong. I followed them home through the woods. The law was useless, I tried.
Im not saying shadow did anything wrong! He just got the blame. Now I will shoot any dog on my property. I have notified all the neighbors Especially the ones whos dogs they were. They all came back!! but they never went home! I hate to kill any animal even the ones I raise for food. But I just can't take the chance again. I cried everytime I had to put one of my goats out of its missery!!! Even now when I pass the hole I burried them in I get pains! Its been 5 years!!!
So Sorry shadow got the blame! but go easy on the neighbors. Hopefully they didn't know he belonged to you.

Good Luck, quick recovery, and God Bless!

It really doesn't matter where Shadow was as he wasn't contained in your yard. He may not intimidate you but after seeing his picture many people would be scared of him if he were running up to their kids or skulking around them. He's a dog of a breed with a strong prey drive so it wouldn't be beyond belief that he could have been doing what comes naturally to him. You weren't there to see why he got shot. Why not just take your lumps and say "wow I blew it. I didnt' contain my dog and he got shot" instead of giving a litany as to why he "just wouldn't harm anything". We'd still offer our sympathy's and well wishes for your dog.

I do not think I "Blew it". And I still believe that people should call animal control or come to the owner before taking it upon themselves to shoot an animal. And he does not look intimidating, he is just a dog! And it does matter where he was IF he wasn't in someone's yard, if it was in the woods right behind our house, then they have no right to shoot!
I took my lumps as you call it when he came back into the house bleeding and I had to rush him to the vet! I didn't post this story for you or others to berate me on how it was my fault. I was upset and worried about my dog so I posted the story.

Hope your dog is doing ok.Maybe you can create a run line to attach him too.I had a husky come into my yard last winter and bite up my dog.Almost $500 in vet bills. I will now mace dogs that wander into my yard.Used to catch them, but after the attack I am afraid of loose dogs.I still see the husky that attacked my dog,and if it comes in the yard......

Hoping you find a good solution to this problem.Healings for your dog.So very lucky!

I knew a hound that could climb a 6 foot fence no problem, another 5 feet wouldn't have mattered at all, they had to have 'cat fencing' ( fencing on brackets mounted at a 45* angle with the fence, towards the dog/cat) at the top and 4 sets of hot wire (one inside, one outside both top and bottom).

She would ground out the wire by digging dirt on two sides towards the fence (the dirt pile touched the wire and the ground) in two places then digging between the piles where the wire was grounded out- I said it was not connected correct, but it was - that dog was too smart for her own good.

----

I have been attacked by a dog, large breed mutt previously very friendly- had his 'good canine citizen' certificate meaning he could do nursing home work and the childrens' hospital... since then all large breed dogs make me a little nervous unless they are service dogs that are on duty, service dogs when out of coat or harness are just that, dogs.

If one (large breed dog) was bounding up to my child and his posture was ANYTHING but happy/friendly (yes even overly submissive) I would protect my son (stand aggressively)... even 'happy/friendly' I would remove myself and son from the situation.

I am sorry about your dog. I'm sure it was a nightmare for you finding him shot. That being said, I've watched my goldens, the same goldens who snuggle and play with my cats and who are quite gentle around my chickens, chase and bark threateningly at the barn cats from over the field when we walk over there with them. I honestly don't think either of my dogs would actually try anything physical, but it still angers and embarrasses me when they act like that. If I'd never walked over there with them, I wouldn't have ever guessed that my big babies would behave that way. We know these people very well, and they know my dogs by name. If these were people who didn't know us and our dogs, I could see them taking action, and I couldn't really blame them (although it would devastate me). I sure hope it was not a case of simple cruelty, which sadly is often the case in such matters.

My Australian Shepherd got off my small acreage from time to time. I thought "What could it hurt.....he is a friendly dog....."

Well come to find out he was causing havoc at my good neighbors house, chasing (maybe killing) his cats. Now I felt REALLY STUPID!

Chained him until the wireless fence arrived. PROBLEM SOLVED! The dog is a happy camper....on MY property!

Its not criticism when many of us have lost animals to free roaming, unsupervised dogs.

Yes I hope it recovers too. I hate to see any animal go through that, but hopefully there will be a lesson learned from it.

it is criticism when people keep telling her how to raise her dog which i am sure she knows how to do already. stuff happends and you can not contain a dog at all times. they need to run around and exercise like every other animal. i read her post before when she said her dog was a sweet heart. people don't realize that not all dogs are mean. while animals are unpredictable, she said the dog might have gone into the woods. she never mentioned poultry and everyone just threw it in there. i feel bad that she has talked about her poor doggie getting shot and everyone wants to tell her how to raise her own dog. she doesn't seem like an idiot to me.

Nobody was saying that. And besides, she's not.
People were just lending their own experiences with their own dogs.

sorry to hear about your dog.... I own dogs and I own other animals as well, we shoot all strays coming into the property, your dog might be fine with other animals.... but, the safety of my animals in my property trumps any excuses a wandering animal owner can give.
