Our Dog Was Shot

Actually they probably did have the right to shoot to kill. Especially if he was threatning their animals. Most states have a law that gives a livestock owner the right to shoot and kill a dog killing or harrassing livestock. I'm glad the dog is doing better. I have 3 dogs that I love. I also have cattle and a dog in bothering our cattle does not get a second chance if we see him/her harrassing them.

If you read correctly my post said that I wasn't even sure that Shadoe was in someone elses yard. He may have been in the woods. Shadoe is not a threatening dog and even if he was in soemones yard they should have come to us or called animal control before shooting. Shadoe grew up with other animals and dogs and he loves children. In fact he is a reading dog here in the county we live in. He goes to children's story hour for disabled kids. Shadoe was not harming anyone or messing with cattle( nine around to be messed with). He did not deserve to be shot!
There are other ways of handling a dog just being in someones yard, if that was the case!

I am sorry your dog was shot. We own a labrador and a german shephard. The lab roams the neighborhood, (we only have 5 neighbors, all related) but the GSD does not. For this specific reason. My GSD is a wonderfully sweet dog, but becuase of his breed, the neighbors are afraid of him. I do believe he would get shot for doing the same thing the lab does. While I defend anyone's right to shoot a dog threatening livestock, and I have had goats killed by a neighbor's dog, no dog deserves to be shot because someone "thought" he was a threat. If he was being bad its one thing. But simply to shoot is not good. A warning shot in the air could have run him home, at least they could have tried if he wasn't after anything. I hope he continues to heal, and have you considered a wireless fence? Works for my GSD, when my guys leave it turned on.

I totally understand about having a husky

We took ours in over the summer after we found her in the goat pen doing what seemed like stalking. I talked to the neighbors that owned her, and they of course, being farmers and knowing that chasing livestock is a no no, said - "Just shoot her next time". I almost died when I heard that! So, I talked to the wife, and she told me the whole story of this dog. I told her I was willing to take her, and either find her a good home on my own, or give her to a husky rescue. Well, the breed rescues wanted nothing to do with the dog unless she was in perfect health, spayed & UTD on all shots!!!

Silly me, I thought that's what rescues were for

Anyway, she won us over, and we found out that she wasn't trying to hurt the goats/alpacas. She goes in and gets them to play with her Dixie is only going on 2 years old this July. We too have a fenced in yard, but she can get out of it. We are going to string up some electric around the top so she learns not to jump. In the meantime, have to put the electric training collar on her and go out with her to make sure she stays safe. Dixie is an amazingly loving dog, and would not hurt someone, but if she goes into another farmers cattle pasture, ...

Dixie & I are Hoping for a quick recovery for your boy!

Best to tie him in the yard to potty so he can't make it over the fence. Just tie him for a little while until you get your new fence, and then bring him back inside.

I suspect if he can make it over a 6 ft fence he won't really view an 8 footer as a challange. You will probably have to string electric wire around the top of the fence.

If your dog was out of your sight you really don't know what he was doing.

A dog that is big, fluffy and friendly to us might look giant, hairy and scary to somebody else.

I wonder if poultry netting would work to help keep your dog in, keep him from jumping out of the area. Wouldn't even have to be over the entire yard, maybe just around the perimiter, tipped inward and upward.

Thank you all for the well wishes. He seems to be doing a lot better. He has gained some energy and seems more like himself. He just hates being taken out on the leash!
But, I am not going through that again!

This may have been mentioned before, but it's possible Shadoe was shot by someone who shoots before they see what it is they're shooting at. I know of a couple people who go out hunting and hear something ... think it's a deer, shoot and it ended up being a cow that had escaped.

Glad to hear your dog is recovering.
